Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Miyakojima (Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture) is a southern island located approximately 300km southwest of the main island of Okinawa. Its greatest attractions are its white sand beaches surrounded by coral reefs and crystal clear waters, making it a popular destination for marine activities such as diving, snorkeling, and SUP. Historically influenced by the Ryukyu Kingdom, it underwent American rule after the war before returning to Japan. Its unique festivals and food culture (Miyako soba noodles, seafood, etc.) remain strong. The island also offers easy access to outlying islands (Irabujima, Kurimajima, Ikemajima, etc.) connected by long bridges, allowing you to drive around to multiple scenic spots.
Highlights
- Yonaha Maehama: One of Japan's best beaches with a long stretch of white sand. The sunsets and shallow waters are beautiful, making it perfect for strolling and taking photos.
- Higashi-Hennazaki: A promenade stretching out to the tip of the cape and a white lighthouse. A classic spot where you can enjoy the spectacular view while feeling the sea breeze.
- Irabu Ohashi Bridge: A large bridge connecting Miyako Island and Irabu Island. The exhilarating feeling of driving over the ocean is appealing, and once you cross the bridge you can enjoy the sea and sandy beaches of Irabu Island.
- Kurima Island and Kurima Bridge: The contrast between the blue ocean and white sand seen from the observation deck on Kurima Island is beautiful. The quiet beaches on Kurima Island are also recommended.
- Ikema Bridge and Ikema IslandThe highlight is the cobalt blue sea seen from the bridge. There are many spots suitable for snorkeling around Ikema Island.
- Yabiji: One of the largest coral reefs in Japan. Depending on the tide, the coral can be seen right up to the surface of the sea, making snorkeling and diving from a boat popular.
- Sunayama Beach: A small beach characterized by sand dunes and natural rock caves. A popular photo spot.
- Marine Activities: Diving, snorkeling, SUP, fishing, etc. The water is highly transparent, making it ideal for observing tropical fish and coral.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- planeMiyako Airport (MMY) is the gateway to the island. It takes about 45-50 minutes from Naha Airport, and about 2-3 hours by direct flight from Tokyo (Haneda/Narita) or Osaka (Itami/Kansai) (depending on the season and flight).
- Ferry/High-Speed Boat: Direct ferries to the main island are limited, so planes are the most common way to get there. You can also cross bridges to nearby islands (such as Irabu Island) by car.
- Traveling within the island: There is no train, so renting a car is the most convenient option. There are also local buses, but they run infrequently, so the most practical way to sightsee is by car (rental car) or rental bicycle + sightseeing taxi. It is recommended to make reservations for rental cars early during the peak season.
- Approximate travel time from the airport: Miyako Airport → City (Hirara) approx. 15 minutes, Miyako Airport → Yonaha Maehama approx. 30-40 minutes (depending on traffic conditions).
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Day trip: It is possible to take a short walk on the beach from the airport, but it can be hectic considering the travel time.
- 2 days, 1 night: A good itinerary to visit 1-2 major beaches, Cape Higashi-Hennazaki, and the scenic bridge.
- 2-3 nights: Take a leisurely tour of Yonaha Maehama, Irabu Island, Kurima Island, and Ikema Island, and include one marine activity (snorkeling or diving).
- 4-7 nights: Allows for remote island hopping, multiple diving trips, fishing, and extended relaxation stays. Recommended if you want to adjust your plans based on the weather and sea conditions.
- Estimated time spent at each spot: Yonaha Maehama 2-3 hours, Higashi Heiannazaki 1-1.5 hours, Kurima-Ikema drive half a day to full day, snorkeling/diving half a day to full day (depending on the tour).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- congestion: During the summer high season (especially July and August), the number of tourists increases and it becomes difficult to find rental cars and accommodation. We recommend making reservations early.
- Typhoons and Weather: Flights and ferries are likely to be canceled during typhoon season (June to November, especially August to September). Be sure to check the weather forecast and flight information before traveling.
- Maritime Safety:Areas with strong currents and the outer edges of offshore reefs are dangerous. Do not swim far at your own discretion, and it is recommended that you wear a life jacket and be accompanied by a guide. Be careful as there are times when jellyfish (such as box jellyfish) appear.
- Environmental protection and etiquette: Taking coral or shells home is often prohibited, so do not touch or step on the coral to protect the ecosystem. Sunscreens with strong chemical ingredients can have a negative effect on the coral, so we recommend using sunscreen and rash guards that are "reef-safe."
- Car/traffic:Rent-a-car is convenient as there are few local buses. The roads on the island are narrow and one-way in some places, so drive carefully. Drinking and driving is strictly prohibited.
- Medical care and supplies: As it is typical of remote islands, medical institutions and pharmacies may be limited, so it is a good idea to prepare your regular medications and first aid supplies.
- Consideration for local life: Refrain from intruding on residents' living spaces and making noise. Take your trash home or follow instructions.
Please use the above information as a reference and check the weather and sea conditions to enjoy a safe and comfortable trip to Miyakojima. If necessary, we can also create recommended plans for each season and specific itineraries, so please let us know.
