Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Usa Jingu Shrine, located in Usa City, Oita Prefecture, is the head shrine of Japan's leading Hachiman shrines. Legend has it that it was founded in the 8th century (Wado to Yoro era), and the shrine enshrines three main deities: Emperor Ojin (Hachiman), Himegami, and Emperor Chuai. Since ancient times, it has been devoutly revered by the Imperial Court and samurai, and is particularly known for its historical role in attracting the faith of the samurai class.

Architecturally, the shrine is attractive for its unique shrine building style known as Hachiman-zukuri, its vast grounds, and the appearance of the approach to the shrine. It is characterized by its seasonal changes, traditional festivals, and the opportunity to experience the history of the ancient shrine in a solemn atmosphere.
