Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Nara National Museum is a national art museum that houses and exhibits Nara's rich Buddhist culture. Founded in the Meiji period, the museum has long been committed to protecting and displaying the historical heritage of the ancient capital of Nara. The museum consists of the historic Old Main Building (architectural design from the Meiji period) and the more recently renovated Heiseikan (focusing on special exhibitions and preservation and restoration exhibits). Its collection includes numerous masterpieces of Buddhist art spanning from the Nara period to the early modern period, including Buddhist statues, paintings, ritual implements, and sutras. Large-scale special exhibitions held in spring and autumn (e.g., exhibitions related to the Shosoin Repository and annual special exhibitions) attract many visitors from both Japan and abroad and are one of the highlights of sightseeing in Nara.

Highlights

  • Permanent exhibition of Buddhist art collection: Buddhist statues, paintings, crafts, sutras, etc. You can see crafts from the Nara period and masterpieces from the Kamakura period onwards up close.
  • Special Exhibitions at the Heiseikan: The special exhibitions held every year (which sometimes include the Shosoin Treasure Exhibition) display rare national treasures and important cultural properties, and are popular events that are sure to attract crowds.
  • The architecture of the former main building: The beautiful exterior and interior space from the Meiji period are also worth seeing. Recommended for architecture fans.
  • Introduction to preservation and restoration, and research results: The process of restoration and preservation, as well as research reports, are sometimes exhibited, allowing visitors to learn about the behind-the-scenes aspects of cultural properties.
  • Seasonal Events: Lectures, exhibition guides, evening openings and other events are held from time to time (check official information).
