Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tenranzan is a small mountain with an elevation of about 197m in Hanno City, Saitama Prefecture, and is a popular hiking spot that can be easily climbed from the city. The name is said to come from "Tenran (the Emperor looks at it)," and is said to have come from Emperor Meiji's admiration of the scenery when he visited the area (legend).

Although it is a low mountain, you can see the city of Hanno and the surrounding mountains from the summit, and if the weather is good, you may even be able to see Mount Fuji in the distance. It is easily accessible and has well-maintained hiking trails, making it ideal for families, beginners, and those just looking to take a walk. The changing scenery of the seasons, including cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in early summer, and autumn leaves, is also appealing.

Highlights

  • View from the summit: Hanno city and the surrounding countryside, and on clear days, a distant view of Mt. Fuji.
  • Circular route with Mount Tonosu: You can combine this with the neighboring Mount Tonosu to enjoy a varied hike.
  • Seasonal scenery: Cherry blossoms and fresh greenery in spring, and beautiful autumn leaves. Popular for photography.
  • Historical and cultural spots: You can also visit nearby temples, shrines, and historical sites, such as Noninji Temple near the trailhead.
  • A pilgrimage site for anime fans: It is also known as a location that appears in the anime "Encouragement of Climb," and is visited by many young climbers and fans.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Hanno Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line and JR Hachiko Line
  • Travel time from the station: Approximately 10-15 minutes on foot from Hanno Station to the trailhead (this may vary depending on the route).
  • Directions: From the north exit of Hanno Station (or from the information board after exiting the ticket gate), head towards Noninji Temple to find the trailhead. Follow the signs and local information boards for safety.
  • By car: While there are paid parking lots and municipal parking lots in the area, they tend to get crowded on weekends, so we recommend using public transportation.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Round trip hike (trailhead → summit → trailhead): Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours (including time to enjoy the scenery at your own pace).
  • If you include the circular course to Mt. Tatenozuyama, it will take about 2 to 3 hours.
  • If you're mainly sightseeing and strolling: You can plan a half-day to full-day trip that also includes the area around Hanno Station, Nonin-ji Temple, and Hanno Riverbank.

Nearby spots

  • Noninji Temple (near the trailhead): A historic temple perfect for a stroll.
  • Hanno Riverbank: You can enjoy barbecues, walks, and playing in the river on the banks of the Irumagawa River.
  • Akebono Children's Forest Park (a Moomin-related park): Recommended for family sightseeing.
  • Metsa/Moomin Valley Park (accessible by car or bus): A popular theme park (check in advance).
  • Cafes and restaurants in the city: There are many convenient places to rest and eat after hiking scattered around Hanno Station.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The trailhead and summit can be crowded on weekends, during the autumn foliage season, and on sunny days. If you want a quieter experience, we recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the morning.
  • Toilets and equipment: There may not be toilets at the summit, so make sure to use one near the station or trailhead. Comfortable walking shoes, drinks, and rain gear are essential.
  • Manners: Please observe basic mountain climbing manners, such as always taking your trash with you, giving way on mountain trails, not stepping on vegetation, and strictly prohibiting fires. If you are bringing pets, please keep them on a leash and be sure to dispose of their waste.
  • Weather and clothing: Even on low mountains, the weather can change suddenly. It can get particularly cold in winter, and in early spring, beware of strong winds and falling rocks. Be sure to check the weather forecast before setting off.
  • Safety measures: There are some areas where mobile phone reception is unstable, so it is a good idea to let your family know your itinerary and expected return time. If you are traveling with small children, make sure to keep the itinerary within your limits.

Tenranyama is a great place to easily enjoy nature and views, and is the perfect place for those who want to feel the mountain air in a short space of time. Combine seasonal attractions and sightseeing in the surrounding area to create a reasonable plan for your trip.
