Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Osezaki is a small cape jutting out into Suruga Bay in Nishiizu, Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. At the base of the cape is the ancient Ose Shrine, which has been popular as a place to pray for safety at sea and the protection of the fishing industry. As the cape forms a bay, the waves are calm and clear, allowing for the observation of a wide variety of marine life, making it known as one of Japan's leading diving spots. The cape's natural scenery, the charm of the shrine, and the underwater biodiversity all combine to make it a major attraction.

Highlights

  • Ose Shrine: A historic shrine at the foot of the cape. The approach and the shrine grove have a lovely atmosphere, and the view of the sea makes it a great place for a stroll.
  • Diving and snorkeling: Enjoy the rich underwater ecosystem of Suruga Bay. There are many diving spots for beginners to intermediate and advanced divers, and there are many diving shops.
  • Cape walking trails and observation points: There is a path that leads to the tip of the cape, and there are spots where you can enjoy beautiful views across the sea and sunsets (views from observation decks and rocky areas).
  • Observing underwater life: soft corals, sea slugs, schools of fish, and seasonal migratory fish can often be seen from spring to autumn.
  • Photography: The scenery of the sea, shrine, and rocky shore is scenic and there are many photo spots, and the light is particularly beautiful in the early morning and evening.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Numazu Station is the most popular station. It is about a 40-60 minute drive from Numazu Station (depending on traffic conditions).
  • Bus: Although the number of buses varies depending on the season and day of the week, Izu Hakone Bus and other buses operate routes from Numazu Station to Osezaki. Please check the timetable in advance.
  • By car: Accessible from the Tomei Expressway and Shin-Tomei Expressway. There are several parking lots around the cape, but they may fill up during peak seasons, so it is recommended to arrive early.
  • Taxi: It is also convenient to take a taxi from Numazu Station (40-60 minutes, fare varies depending on distance).
  • For divers: If you bring your own diving equipment, consider using a car or dive shop shuttle.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short sightseeing (visiting the shrine, strolling around the cape, taking photos): Approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours
  • Day trips including diving and snorkeling: Half a day to a full day (if you plan to do two dives, half a day to a full day is recommended)
  • Relaxed stay (including walking around the area and sightseeing nearby): 1-2 nights (1 night or more recommended if you plan to focus on diving)

Nearby spots

  • Numazu Port (Numazu Minato) and Numazu Port Deep Sea Aquarium: Enjoy seafood and aquarium tours (approximately 30-50 minutes by car).
  • Awashima area: Take a boat to see the local sights and scenery, including the Awashima Aquarium (be aware of weather and operation).
  • Sunset spots in Nishiizu (Toda, Toi, etc.): Areas where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets (within driving distance).
  • Ida Beach: A popular beach for diving and swimming (another nearby diving spot).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: Parking lots and entry points are crowded during Golden Week, summer holidays, and peak diving seasons. We recommend arriving early in the morning.
  • Manners: Please be considerate of nature by not touching the rocks or marine life, not stepping on coral or seaweed, and always taking your trash with you. Also, at shrines, please observe proper etiquette and be quiet.
  • Safety precautions: The rocky shoreline is slippery and has poor footing in some areas. Please wear non-slip footwear and check the tide and weather before proceeding. Entry may not be possible on days with poor sea conditions.
  • Diving: Select a diving spot that suits your equipment and skills, and follow the instructions of the local dive shop. In winter, the water temperature is low and a dry suit may be recommended.
  • Facility and shop hours: Shops, convenience stores, and bus services vary depending on the season, so please check opening hours, timetables, and reservations in advance.
  • What to bring: It's a good idea to bring drinks, sunscreen, a change of clothes, and warm clothes (for windy days).

Osezaki is an attractive cape where you can easily experience the richness of nature and the sea. When visiting, please be mindful of safety and environmental conservation, and prepare accordingly for the season and weather.
