Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Taisho Pond is a freshwater pond in the Kamikochi area of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. It is a natural pond formed in 1915 (Taisho 4) when the Azusa River was dammed following the eruption of Mount Yakedake. The pond is particularly famous for its unique landscape of dead tree trunks scattered throughout the pond, and the "mirror-like scenery" of the Hotaka mountain range and Mount Yakedake reflected on the water's surface. The tranquil, photogenic landscape is popular with tourists and photographers, and another of its charms is its changing appearance with each season.

Highlights

  • Dead tree trunk: The old tree remaining in the pond makes a striking monochrome subject. This creates a particularly striking atmosphere on morning mist or slightly cloudy days.
  • Reflection of the Hotaka mountain range and Mt. Yakedake: On clear days, the mountains are clearly reflected on the water's surface, and combined with the majestic background, it makes a great spot for photography.
  • Sunrise and sunset light: In the early morning and evening, the colors change dramatically depending on the lighting, creating a fantastical landscape.
  • Walking path: There is a flat walkway around the pond, so you can easily stroll and observe. You can also walk along the riverside promenade towards the center of Kamikochi (towards Kappa Bridge).
  • The changing seasons: The area shows different faces during the seasons of fresh greenery, deep green in summer, autumn leaves, and snow (Kamikochi is closed in winter).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest entrance: Matsumoto Station (JR) — Head towards Kamikochi from Matsumoto city.
  • Common access methods:
    • Matsumoto Station → Shinshimashima Station (Alpico Kotsu/Matsumoto Electric Railway Line) - Approx. 25 minutes, then transfer → From Shinshimashima Station, take a local bus (Alpico Kotsu) bound for Kamikochi to the Taishoike bus stop - Approx. 40-50 minutes (depending on the season and road conditions).
    • Seasonal direct bus: There is also a direct bus that runs from Matsumoto Station to Kamikochi (or Hirayu/Shinhotaka) (takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes). Please check the timetable in advance.
  • By car: Kamikochi has restrictions on private vehicles, so if you are traveling with your own car, you will need to park at the Kamikochi Bus Terminal (the parking lot on the Sawando or Hirayu side) and use a shuttle bus or taxi.
  • Note: Buses can be crowded depending on the season and time of day, so we recommend making travel and round-trip bus reservations (if possible) early, especially during peak season.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • A leisurely look at Taisho Pond alone: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including photography and walking around the area).
  • If you are going around the main spots of Kamikochi, such as Taisho Pond, Kappa Bridge, and Myojin Pond, it will take from half a day (3-4 hours) to a full day (6-8 hours).
  • If combining trekking or mountain climbing: Depending on the course, it can take anywhere from half a day to several days. Please set aside time according to your plans.

Nearby spots

  • Kappa Bridge (the central spot of Kamikochi, about 20-40 minutes on foot from Taisho Pond)
  • Myojin Pond and Mt. Myojin (walking trails and a quiet pond, a historic site of nature worship)
  • Dakezawa/Hotaka Mountain Range Trailhead (starting point for hikers)
  • Mount Yakedake (an active volcano that created the landscape of Taisho Pond, a popular spot for hiking and observation)
  • Hirayu Onsen and Shinhotaka Onsen (accessible by car or bus, soak in the baths to soothe your fatigue)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets very crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, and the autumn foliage season. Arriving early in the morning allows you to sightsee at a leisurely pace and is also good for taking photos.
  • Environmental conservation etiquette: Kamikochi is a natural park area. Please be sure to take your trash with you and stay on the trails to avoid damaging the natural environment and vegetation.
  • Volcano Information: Mt. Yakedake is an active volcano. Information on eruption alerts and volcanic gases may be issued, so please check the weather and volcano information in advance. If restrictions are issued, there may be restrictions on entry.
  • Clothing and equipment: Due to the mountain climate, the weather can change suddenly. Be sure to bring warm clothing, rain gear, and comfortable shoes. It can get quite chilly in the early morning.
  • Traffic Note: Kamikochi has restrictions on private cars. The shuttle bus from the parking lot can get crowded, so please allow yourself plenty of time.
  • Operating hours: Some roads and facilities in Kamikochi may be closed during the snowy season. The tourist season is usually from spring to autumn (e.g. late April to early November), but this period changes from year to year, so please check in advance.
  • Mobile phone/communications: As this is a mountainous area, communication may be poor in some areas. Please prepare necessary communication methods and maps in advance.

Kamikochi and Taisho Pond are precious places where untouched nature remains. When visiting, please remember to be considerate of the surrounding nature and other visitors, and aim to have a safe and comfortable stay.
