Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Tama Zoological Park (Hino City, Tokyo) is a metropolitan zoo known for its spacious, natural-looking exhibit space and exhibits that emphasize animal behavior. Opened in 1958, the zoo takes advantage of its wide, hilly terrain to create separate zones (Asian Garden, Australian Garden, African Garden, etc.) where a wide variety of animals can be observed. One of its attractions is the way the animals are shown in their natural habitats, with exhibits of Australian animals such as koalas, a grazing exhibit that recreates the African grasslands, and displays of forest animals. The zoo's undulating interior makes it a great place to enjoy animal observation while strolling around.
Highlights
- African Savannah Exhibit: Giraffes, zebras, and other animals can be seen in a relatively large space, allowing you to leisurely observe the movements of the herd and how they eat grass.
- Koala House (Australian Garden): A very popular exhibit in Tama. The animals are kept with careful consideration for their environment, making it easy to observe them eating and resting.
- Exhibits of chimpanzees, gorillas, and other apes: You can see them behaving socially in groups and playing on play equipment.
- Mountains and forest areas of Japan: You can also take a close look at familiar animals such as Japanese macaques and raccoon dogs. It's interesting to see how their fur and behavior change depending on the season.
- Children's interaction and exhibits: It is popular with families as it has small animal exhibits, explanations on how to care for them, and educational programs.
- Viewpoints and seasonal nature: From the elevated area within the park, you can look out over the surrounding greenery, and enjoy the scenery during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- trainThe nearest station is Tama Dobutsu Koen Station. You can use the Tama Monorail and the Keio Line (Keio Dobutsuen Line/branch line). It's about a 5-10 minute walk from the station to the park entrance (this varies depending on the exit and route).
- Bus/Car: There may be local buses available from the surrounding area. If you are coming by car, there is a paid parking lot at the park, but it tends to fill up on weekends and holidays, so we recommend using public transportation. If you are coming from the city center, please allow yourself plenty of time as traffic may be a problem.
- Note: Please check the official website or the latest information on transportation in advance for specific times, operation, parking information, and the location of the park entrance.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short visit to the main exhibits only: 1.5-2 hours (if rushed)
- Leisurely tour and breaks included: 3-4 hours (including lunch and interactive activities)
- With children, participating in events, or just taking a leisurely stroll: Half a day to a full day

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- congestion: The zoo is extremely crowded on weekends, public holidays, and during long school holidays. Popular exhibits (such as the koala enclosure and savanna) tend to attract large crowds, so if you visit early on a weekday morning or just before closing time, you can enjoy a more relaxed experience.
- Terrain and walking within the park: The nursery is hilly and has many slopes and stairs. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. If you are coming with a stroller or wheelchair, some routes may be inconvenient, so it is a good idea to check the nursery's barrier-free access information in advance.
- Manners: Feeding or reaching out to the animals is prohibited in most cases. Please follow the instructions of the information boards and staff to avoid disturbing the animals or other visitors.
- Weather and SeasonIn summer, you need to take measures against the heat (a hat and staying hydrated), and it's a good idea to bring some insect protection as well. In winter, animals may become less active, but on the other hand, you may see them behaving in ways that adapt to the cold. Outdoor exhibits can be difficult to see on rainy days, so consider a route with many indoor exhibits.
- Check for the latest information: Opening hours, closing days, special exhibits and events, temporary closures (for animal health management, etc.) may change. Please check the official website and social media for the latest information before visiting.
