Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Tonohetsuri is a scenic valley located in Shimogo Town, Minamiaizu District, Fukushima Prefecture, characterized by the scenery created by the mountain stream and the towering, columnar and tower-shaped rock formations. In the local dialect, "hetsuri" means "cliff," and the tuff (rock formed from solidified volcanic ash) formed by years of river erosion has been worn away to reveal the unique columnar and folding screen-like rock surface. Due to its outstanding scenery, it has been designated a natural monument, and its charm lies in the beauty that changes with the seasons.
