Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shikoku Karst (Yusuhara Town, Takaoka District, Kochi Prefecture) is a highland region formed by the erosion of limestone over many years, and is known for its unique landscape of high-altitude grasslands and rock formations. Grazing cows and seasonal alpine plants can be seen on the wide grasslands, and on clear days, it is possible to see distant mountain ranges and the Pacific Ocean. A sea of clouds can sometimes appear in the early mornings, and many people visit the area to observe the starry skies and watch the sunrise. The formation of the terrain was due to the erosion and uplift of limestone, and its greatest appeal lies in the natural beauty and the panoramic views that can be enjoyed.

Highlights

  • Panoramic grassland: The spacious grassland and scattered limestone boulders create an idyllic landscape that is a popular photo spot.
  • Sea of clouds and sunrise: This tends to occur early in the morning from autumn to winter, and there are days when you can see a fantastic sea of clouds below you.
  • Stargazing and astronomical observation: Because of the high altitude and little light pollution, it is an easy place to observe the starry sky and the Milky Way (on a clear day).
  • Alpine plants and seasonal flowers: From spring to summer, highland flowers bloom, making this a popular spot for photography enthusiasts.
  • Hiking trails: There are trails ranging from flat walking trails to slightly hilly trekking trails, allowing you to enjoy the scenery in a short amount of time.
  • Grazing scenery: Cows leisurely grazing on grass are scattered around, allowing you to observe the scenery coexisting with nature.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Public transportation is limited around the Shikoku Karst, so the most convenient way to get there is by car. There are sections to higher elevations via prefectural roads and forest roads, and there are points with parking lots and observation spaces.

  • Private car/rental car: Access via national and prefectural roads from Kochi City, Matsuyama City, etc. Travel time depends on the departure point, but it is expected to take approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours by car from Kochi City (this may vary depending on road conditions).
  • Public transportation: There may be local buses and municipal buses from the nearest major train station, but they run infrequently and are limited in frequency. If you are traveling by public transportation, be sure to check the timetable and operating status in advance.
  • Taxis/tourist buses: If you are visiting in a group or want to fit in a schedule, using a taxi or charter bus is practical.
  • Road conditions: Road conditions may deteriorate in winter (snow and ice) or on rainy days, so we recommend that you use four-wheel drive, chains, etc., and that you drive with an experienced driver.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: Just stroll around the observation deck and parking area and take photos → Approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Leisurely sightseeing: Visit multiple observation spots, take walks and take breaks → Approximately 2-3 hours
  • Hiking/photography purpose: Longer trails or morning and evening photography (sea of clouds/starry sky) → Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots

  • Yusuhara Town Walking Tour and Roadside Station: Local products, meals, and tourist information are available.
  • Nearby hot spring facilities: There are many day-trip hot springs in the vicinity where you can relax after a day of sightseeing, so it's convenient to plan to stay overnight and take a bath.
  • Nearby mountains and natural parks: There are tourist spots and hiking trails that can be reached by car, making it possible to visit multiple spots in a day trip.
  • Access to tourist spots throughout Shikoku: You can travel by car to Shimanto River, Cape Ashizuri, and other famous spots, and create a travel plan that combines the two.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Public transportation limitations: Buses run infrequently, so if you are limited by time, please consider using a car or arranging transportation in advance.
  • Sudden changes in weather: The weather in the highlands is prone to change, with fog, strong winds, and sudden drops in temperature. Be sure to bring warm clothing and rain gear.
  • Roads and Parking: In winter, there is a possibility of snow and ice, making roads slippery. Winter gear and careful driving are required. Parking spaces are limited in some areas, so please be considerate of others when it is crowded.
  • Nature/ranch etiquette: When in areas with grazing cattle, please observe etiquette such as not getting too close to the animals or feeding them. Do not enter fenced or restricted areas.
  • Garbage and Environmental Conservation: Please be sure to take your trash with you when you leave. Please check beforehand as some areas have limited facilities such as toilets. The vegetation and terrain are delicate, so please avoid trampling on them.
  • Nighttime safety: If you are staying overnight to observe the stars, be sure to keep lights on, dress warm, and check your cell phone reception. There are some areas where your cell phone may not be able to receive signal, so be sure to prepare in advance.
  • Check tourist information: Local routes, facilities, and opening and closing times may change depending on the season and year. Please check the latest information from Yusuhara Town or the tourist association before setting off.

(Note) If it's your first time, it's a good idea to check it out by car during the day. If you're aiming to see the sea of clouds in the morning or the starry sky at night, we recommend a plan that includes an overnight stay. Please enjoy the natural scenery with safety as your top priority.
