Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kouri Ohashi Bridge is approximately 1,960 meters long and opened in 2005, connecting the Motobu Peninsula in the northern part of Okinawa's main island with Kouri Island. It is a popular driving course over the crystal clear emerald green sea, and is known for its beautiful seascape known as "Kouri Blue." The bridge itself is a tourist attraction, with tourists stopping their cars to take photos and enjoy strolling. The island side is home to a number of attractions, including cafes, souvenir shops, beaches, and a heart-shaped rock (Heart Rock).
Highlights
- View of the bridge: The contrast between the blue sea seen from the train window and the clear sky is beautiful. The scenery changes with the light in the morning and evening.
- Photo spot: Take commemorative photos at the observation and parking spaces on both ends of the bridge. These are also famous Instagrammable spots.
- Heart Rock on Kouri Island: A heart-shaped rock that appears at low tide. Popular with couples and tourists taking photos.
- Kouri Beach: Relax on the white sand and crystal clear waters (monitoring and facilities vary by location).
- Restaurants and cafes on the island: There are restaurants serving local seafood and Okinawan cuisine, where you can enjoy a meal while enjoying the view of Kouri.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
As there is no rail network on the main island of Okinawa, it is more convenient to access the area by car than by public transport, so we recommend renting a car.
- From Naha Airport: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours by car (take the Okinawa Expressway → National Route 58 via Nago City → to the site).
- From Nago city: Approximately 30 to 40 minutes by car.
- From Motobu/Churaumi Aquarium: Approximately 20-30 minutes by car (easy to visit along with Kouri Island as a sightseeing route).
- Public transportation: Buses are also available, but they run infrequently, so you may need to transfer or walk. Be sure to check the latest timetable in advance.
- Sightseeing tours: They are often included in day trips and northern sightseeing tours departing from Naha, making them a convenient way to visit without having to drive.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- View of the bridge and photography only: 30 minutes to 1 hour
- Walking around the island's beaches and Heart Rock + snacks: 2-3 hours
- If you plan to visit the surrounding tourist attractions (Churaumi Aquarium, Nakijin Castle Ruins, etc.): Half a day to a full day
Nearby spots
- Kouri Island (island walks, Kouri Beach, Heart Rock)
- Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (approximately 20-30 minutes by car)
- Nakijin Castle Ruins (Nakijin Castle, about 15-25 minutes by car)
- Bise Fukugi Tree Line (Motobu Town, recommended for a peaceful stroll)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: Weekends, holidays, and tourist seasons (spring to summer, Golden Week, New Year's) can be very crowded, causing long waits for parking and traffic jams. We recommend visiting in the early morning or evening when it is less crowded.
- Parking: There are parking spaces on both ends of the bridge, but the number of cars is limited. Please avoid illegal parking as it is against tourist etiquette and obstructs the road.
- Ocean Safety: The waters around Kouri Island are very clear, but there are many areas without lifeguards. If you swim, do so at your own risk and be aware of the currents and weather.
- Respect nature and culture: Please observe good manners, such as not damaging natural features such as Heart Rock and always taking your trash with you.
- Sun protection: Okinawa's UV rays are strong, so be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, and drinking water.
- Drones and filming equipment: Drone flying may be subject to regulations and local rules. Please check and obtain permission before filming.
- Store opening hours: We recommend checking in advance as the opening hours of restaurants and shops in tourist areas may change depending on the season and day of the week.
Kouri Bridge is the perfect spot to enjoy a drive and the ocean views. If you allow yourself plenty of time to explore the surrounding area as well, you'll have a more fulfilling experience.
