Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Hakata Station, located in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, is one of the largest terminal stations in Kyushu and serves as the gateway to the region. Since opening in 1889 (Meiji period), it has undergone several renovations and expansions to become what it is today. In particular, a large-scale redevelopment project in 2011 saw the creation of JR Hakata City (station building and commercial facilities), further enhancing the station as a base for shopping, dining, and sightseeing.
Its distinctive features include the concentration of Shinkansen trains, including the Kyushu Shinkansen, conventional train lines, subways (airport line), express buses, and access to the airport, making it highly convenient for both business and tourism. The station and station building are packed with souvenir shops, restaurants, department stores, movie theaters, and more, making it a great place to enjoy Hakata cuisine and shopping right after arriving.
