Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Senjojiki Cirque is a glacial landform (a cirque) in the Central Alps (around Mt. Kiso-Komagatake) located in Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture. Its unique landscape, combining a wide rocky area carved by glaciers with a grassland of alpine plants, is captivating, and as its name "Senjojiki" suggests, a vast expanse of land stretches out before your eyes. The Komagatake Ropeway takes you up to an altitude of around 2,600m in one go, making it a popular spot for even beginners to enjoy the alpine scenery, alpine plants, and remaining snow in a short amount of time. It is also the starting point for hiking routes, making it a popular base for climbing and traversing Mt. Kiso-Komagatake (Komagatake).

Highlights

  • Panoramic mountain views: A 360-degree view of the peaks of the Central Alps and neighboring mountain ranges.
  • Alpine plants: From spring to summer, alpine plants such as dicentra, aleutiana, and anemone bloom.
  • Remaining snow and snowfields (spring to early summer): During the remaining snow season, the contrast between the snow corridors and white snow fields and the blue sky is beautiful, making it a popular photo spot.
  • Autumn foliage: Enjoy the colors that change with the altitude, and the best time to see them is usually around September to October.
  • Mountain huts and trailheads: There are routes for serious hikes to Mt. Kisokoma (several hours round trip) and short walking routes.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Location: Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture (Senjojiki is near Komagatake Ropeway Senjojiki Station)

How to get there by train or bus

  • JR: The nearest station is Komagane Station on the JR Iida Line. From the station, take a local bus to the base of the ropeway (Shirabidaira, Suganodai Bus Center, etc.).
  • Bus: Take a bus from Komagane Station or the express bus stop (services available from Nagano and Nagoya) bound for Shirabidaira (ropeway station). The bus ride time varies depending on the route, but is generally around 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Ropeway: Take the ropeway (Komagatake Ropeway) from Shirabidaira Station to Senjojiki Station. The journey takes a short time, around 7 minutes (depending on the operation situation). Senjojiki is within walking distance from Yamagami Station.

By car

  • Take the Chuo Expressway, get off at the nearest IC (such as Komagane IC), and take the national and prefectural roads to the ropeway parking lot at the base of the mountain. There is a paid parking lot at the base.
  • Cars are not allowed to go up to the top of the mountain, so you must take the ropeway. During peak periods, the parking lot at the base may fill up, so it is recommended to leave early.

*Ropeway operating hours, bus schedules, and parking information may change depending on the season and weather, so please check the official website or local information in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short sightseeing (viewing and strolling): 1-2 hours (round trip ropeway + stroll around Senjojiki)
  • Relaxing photography and plant observation: 2-4 hours
  • Climbing Mt. Kiso-Komagatake (round trip from Senjojiki): Approximately 5-7 hours round trip for a day trip (varies depending on equipment, physical strength, and weather conditions)

Nearby spots

  • Komagane Plateau: With hot springs, walking trails, and observation spots, it is convenient for sightseeing and lodging.
  • Kozenji Temple: An ancient temple in Komagane City, its gardens, giant trees, and seasonal events are worth seeing.
  • Hiking trails around the Komagatake Ropeway: Full-scale routes leading to Kiso Komagatake and short walking trails.
  • Local cuisine: There are many restaurants in the city that serve Komagane's specialty sauced pork cutlet bowl and other local dishes.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The ropeway and parking lot are extremely crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, and the autumn foliage season. We recommend leaving early in the morning, using it on a weekday, and checking the schedule in advance.
  • Weather changes: The weather on the mountain can change suddenly, with strong winds, fog, and temperature fluctuations. Be sure to bring warm clothing, rain gear, and non-slip shoes.
  • Countermeasures against altitude sickness: Because the altitude increases in a short period of time, you may experience symptoms of altitude sickness such as headaches and dizziness. Please take your time and make sure to take breaks and hydrate.
  • Climbing equipment: If you are planning to go hiking, be sure to bring sufficient equipment (warm clothing, hiking boots, map, food, headlamp, etc.) and plan accordingly to prepare for sunset and bad weather.
  • Plant and animal protection: Alpine plants are fragile. Do not trample or take them home. Please stay on the designated trails.
  • Check access information: The ropeway may be suspended due to strong winds or snowfall. Be sure to check the official information in advance to confirm the timetable and operation status of public transport.

*For the latest operating hours, fares, hiking information, parking information, etc., please check the official Komagatake Ropeway website or the Komagane City Tourist Information website.
