Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Wakimachi Udatsu streetscape (Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture) is a well-preserved streetscape of merchant houses from the Edo to Meiji periods, and its most distinctive feature is the rows of houses with fire walls and decorative small walls called "udatsu" on the roofs.Udatsu were originally structures to prevent fires from spreading to neighboring houses, but they gradually took on decorative functions and developed as symbols of wealth and family status.

The streets, which retain traditional designs such as cobblestones, lattices, namako walls, and storehouses, have a gentle atmosphere and convey the atmosphere of a commercial town from the Edo to Meiji periods to the present day. The charm of this area is that you can enjoy the townscape in a relaxed atmosphere without relying on the bustle of tourist destinations.

Highlights

  • Row of houses with Udatsu: A street lined with beautiful udatsu (small roof walls). You can observe the roof construction, carvings, and tile designs up close.
  • Old merchant house and storehouseThe traditional exterior features lattice doors, storehouses, and namako walls. Cafes and souvenir shops that make the most of the exterior are scattered around the area.
  • Walking spots around town: We recommend wandering the cobblestone streets and alleys to find hidden views and photo spots.
  • Museum and Open House: There are often exhibits of materials related to preserving the townscape, and old houses (visitor facilities) that you can tour inside, so be sure to check the explanations of history and architecture.
  • Seasonal scenery: Enjoy the different expressions of each season, such as the fresh greenery of spring, the young leaves of early summer, the autumn foliage, and the stillness of winter.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus/Taxi: Access by bus or taxi from the nearest JR station (stations around Mima City). As these are local routes, there are not many trains or buses, so we recommend checking the timetable in advance.
  • car: It is generally about 50 to 60 minutes by car from Tokushima city (varies depending on road conditions). In most cases, it takes about 15 to 30 minutes from the nearest highway interchange, so it is convenient to access by car. Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: On weekends, consecutive holidays, and during the autumn foliage season, the number of tourists increases and parking lots can become crowded. Please allow yourself plenty of time.
  • Alleys and private property: Townscapes are also places of daily life. Please refrain from entering private property or residences, and be considerate of residents when taking photographs.
  • Feet and steps: There are many cobblestone streets and uneven ground, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. There are some areas where it may be difficult for wheelchairs or strollers to move around.
  • Business hours and tour availability: Opening hours and holidays of public facilities and stores vary depending on the day of the week and the season. Please check before visiting.
  • Climate action: Take precautions against the heat in summer and the cold in winter. Be careful when it rains as the cobblestones can become slippery.
