Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kitadake is a 3,193m-high mountain located in Minami-Alps City, Yamanashi Prefecture, and is the second highest free-standing peak in Japan after Mount Fuji. It is the main peak of the Southern Alps (Southern Alps National Park) and is known for its rugged ridgelines, vast alpine belt, and rich alpine flora, making it one of the most popular mountains for mountain climbing in the Japanese Alps. While the mountain trails and mountain huts are being developed, the natural environment is rich, and its major attractions include alpine plants in summer (such as dicentra and anemone), autumn foliage, and spectacular views on clear days (Mount Fuji, Yatsugatake, and the peaks of the Central and Northern Alps).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Season and equipment: Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings. Be sure to bring warm clothing suitable for high altitudes and sudden changes in weather, rain gear, a headlamp, a map, a compass, and snacks. In winter, snow and ice remain, so snow gear (crampons, ice axes, etc.) is required.
- Altitude sickness: Due to the high altitude, please take care of your physical condition. If you experience any symptoms such as thirst, headache, or nausea, do not push yourself.
- Reservations required for mountain huts and buses: Mountain hut accommodation and buses to Hirogawara operate on limited periods and can be crowded. Make reservations and arrangements early during long weekends and the summer mountain season.
- Crowds: Hiking trails and mountain huts can be crowded on summer weekends and during the Obon period. If you want a quieter hike, consider going on a weekday or leaving early in the morning.
- Manners and Nature Conservation: Always take your trash with you, use designated toilets, and do not pick plants or stray from the trails. Please follow the rules for conservation.
- Mobile phones and rescue: Mobile phone service may be unstable depending on the location. Please submit a plan, submit a mountain climbing notification (mountain entry notification), and confirm contact details in case of an emergency.
- Flora, fauna, and dangerous creatures: You may encounter local wildlife. Please observe basic etiquette, such as not feeding them and keeping your distance if you encounter them.
