Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Katsuoji Temple is a historic temple nestled in the mountains of Minoh City, Osaka Prefecture, and has long been worshipped as a temple that bestows "good luck in competitions." The temple grounds are spread among the lush greenery of the mountains, and include the main hall, numerous stone steps and approach paths, a teahouse, and a garden. The temple is particularly famous for the sight of numerous "winning daruma dolls" lined up, and is known for the custom of worship where people hoping to win in exams, employment, business, etc., visit the temple and offer a daruma doll with only one eye filled in, as a symbol of their wish.

The natural scenery changes with the seasons, with the fresh greenery of spring, the deep green of summer, and the autumn foliage being particularly beautiful. As it is located on the mountainside, the view from the approach to the temple and the tranquil atmosphere are also popular.

Highlights

  • Winning Daruma (Daruma Offering Hall) — Thousands of Daruma dolls are lined up around the temple grounds. When a wish is granted, the other eye is filled in and the doll is returned.
  • Main Hall and Honzon (principal image) - A place to pray for success and good fortune. You can pray quietly (please follow the signs as there are areas where photography is prohibited).
  • Approach and stone steps - The approach has the atmosphere of an ancient temple. Surrounded by trees, you can enjoy the changing seasons.
  • Gardens and Observation Spots - On clear days, you can see the Osaka Plain from the temple grounds.
  • The seasonal scenery, especially the autumn leaves, is a famous attraction, attracting many photography enthusiasts and tourists.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus (General Route)
    • Hankyu Railway: The nearest station is Minoh Station on the Hankyu Minoh Line. From Minoh Station, take a Hankyu bus or community bus bound for Katsuoji Temple, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes (we recommend checking the route and timetable in advance).
    • Alternatively, you can take a taxi or bus from Ishibashi-Handaimae Station on the Hankyu Takarazuka Line.
  • car
    • From Osaka city, it takes about 30 to 60 minutes (depending on traffic conditions) using the Hanshin Expressway and local roads. There may be parking on the temple grounds, but it may be full during peak hours, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • Walking and hiking
    • There is also a hiking route from the direction of Minoh Park and Minoh Falls, which is recommended for those who want to enjoy nature on their way.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Busy periods: The number of visitors increases during the autumn foliage season (around November), the New Year holidays, and exam season. Please allow plenty of time to get there as crowds and parking shortages are expected.
  • Clothing and footing: The approach to the shrine has many stone steps and slopes, and there are some slippery sections. Please wear comfortable shoes. The path can be especially slippery on rainy days.
  • Handling Daruma Dolls: Daruma dolls are also objects of worship, so please handle them with care. Follow the temple's instructions and observe proper etiquette, such as how to fill in one eye.
  • Photography etiquette: There are some areas within the temple grounds where photography is prohibited. Please follow the posted notices and instructions of the staff.
  • Quietness and worship etiquette: Please pray quietly in the main hall and be considerate of other worshippers. Take your trash home with you or dispose of it in designated areas.
  • Seasonal precautions: Be careful of insects and heat in summer, and cold and frost in winter. When hiking, be sure to pay attention to the weather and dress appropriately.

Before visiting, it's a good idea to check the official website and the latest information on transportation (opening times, bus schedules, parking information, special viewings, etc.). Katsuoji Temple is an attractive spot for worshippers praying for good luck and those who enjoy nature, so we recommend taking your time to explore the area.
