Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Yachiyoza is a historic wooden theater located in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Built in 1910 (Meiji 43), it features an exterior that blends Japanese and Western styles, and an interior space that retains the warmth of wood. It has been preserved and restored as a theater building that conveys the culture of the common people of the Taisho and Showa periods, and is currently used for a variety of events, including kabuki and traditional performing arts performances, concerts, and exhibitions.

Its charm lies in the fact that the stage equipment and seating arrangements from that time have been preserved to the present day. Traditional devices such as the runway, revolving stage, and stage sashes have been fully preserved, making it a valuable space where you can experience behind the scenes of performing arts. In addition, the details of the wooden architecture, such as the box seats and beams, are great for photos, making it a spot where you can experience history and atmosphere.
