Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Motomachi Park is a park with a historic atmosphere located in the Motomachi district of Hakodate City, Hokkaido. It is located on a hill in the Motomachi area, which was formed after Hakodate opened its port in the Meiji period and where foreign settlements and Western-style architecture were concentrated, and it offers an appealing view overlooking the cityscape and Hakodate Bay. The park is equipped with green spaces and walking paths, and is a place of relaxation for tourists and local residents, as it allows visitors to experience the changing nature of the seasons and the unique atmosphere of a port town.

Highlights

  • View from the hill: Enjoy the view of the Western-style buildings in Motomachi, Hakodate Bay, and the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses (on clear days you can see into the distance).
  • Proximity to historical buildings: The area around the park is dotted with Western-style buildings from the Meiji to Taisho periods, such as the former Hakodate Ward Public Hall, the Orthodox Church, and Western-style buildings, making it a worthwhile walking route.
  • Four Seasons Scenery: Enjoy the different scenery of each season, such as cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in early summer, autumn leaves, and snowy scenery.
  • Photo spot: This is a popular tourist photo spot, perfect for taking photos with the exotic cityscape as a backdrop.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • By train or tram: It's a few minutes' walk from the Motomachi or Jujigai stops on the Hakodate City Tram. The most common route is uphill from the stop.
  • JR: From JR Hakodate Station, it is convenient to take the tram (takes about 10-20 minutes depending on the line and stop), or take a taxi for about 10-15 minutes.
  • By car: There are paid parking lots and pay parking lots in the area, but they can get crowded during the tourist season, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • Walking: It is within walking distance from the Hakodate Bay Area (Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse) and the old town (about 15 to 30 minutes depending on your stamina and route), so it is recommended to take a stroll there.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Park only: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including walking and photography)
  • If you also want to visit the surrounding historical buildings and tourist spots: 1.5 to 3 hours (a course that includes the Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall, Orthodox Church, the Bay Area, etc.)

Nearby spots

  • Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall: A wooden Western-style building that can be toured from the inside. A representative historical building of Motomachi.
  • Hakodate Christ Orthodox Church (Christ Orthodox Church): Beautiful architecture of a Russian Orthodox Church.
  • Motomachi Western-style buildings: A stroll through the buildings that remain as remnants of the foreign settlement.
  • Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse (Bay Area): Shopping and gourmet spot. Walking distance or a short tram ride away.
  • Mount Hakodate Ropeway (night view spot): Mount Hakodate is famous for its night view and can be accessed from Motomachi.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The area is crowded during tourist seasons (Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, New Year's holidays) and long weekends. Parking lots tend to fill up quickly, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • Slopes and stairs: Motomachi is an area with many slopes and stairs, so it's important to wear comfortable shoes and plan your itinerary according to your physical condition.
  • Winter safety: In winter, snow and ice can make the trails slippery. Please prepare winter clothing and non-slip shoes (winter boots, crampons, etc.).
  • Manners: As there are many quiet residential areas and religious facilities, please take your trash with you and be mindful of moderation on the premises (such as not shouting). Please also be mindful of manners when visiting churches and other facilities.
  • Photography: Tourist photos are welcome, but please be mindful of the lives and privacy of local residents when taking and sharing them.

Motomachi Park is a relaxing spot where you can enjoy the historical atmosphere and harbor scenery that is characteristic of Hakodate. If you combine your visit with a stroll around the surrounding Western-style buildings and churches, you will be able to experience the charm of Hakodate even more deeply.
