[Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)]
Motonosumi Shrine (official name: Motonosumi Inari Shrine) is a small Inari shrine located along the coast in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The contrast between the sheer cliffs behind it, the spectacular view of the Sea of Japan before you, and the bright red torii gates (said to be lined up in a row) lining the approach to the shrine is striking, and it has attracted attention from both within Japan and overseas as a photogenic tourist spot. At the top of the torii gate at the end of the approach to the shrine is a coin offering box (saisenbako), which is said to grant good fortune if you throw something into it, making it a popular attraction for visitors. In recent years (2010s), the shrine has been featured in both domestic and international media, resulting in an increase in tourists.

[Highlights]
– A path lined with bright red torii gates along the seafront: the beautiful contrast with the blue of the sea and sky makes it a popular photo spot.
– Torii gate on the cliffside and ocean view: Experience the majestic scenery created by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan and the cliffs up close.
- Offering box on top of the torii gate (try your luck): Throwing coins into the box placed high up is a popular experience for visitors. However, try at your own risk.
- Evening and morning views: The sunset on a clear day is particularly beautiful, and taking sunset photos through the torii gate is appealing.
– Small local shops and souvenirs along the approach to the shrine: There are souvenir shops and snack stalls along the approach to the shrine, so you can enjoy a short stroll.

[Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)]
- Train + Bus/Taxi: The nearest train station is JR Nagato City Station. There are few buses from the station, so if you are taking the bus, please check the timetable in advance. If you take a taxi, the journey takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes (depending on road conditions).
- Car: Access by car is convenient from all over Yamaguchi Prefecture. The most common route is via national and prefectural roads, and you can enjoy the scenery along the way. There is parking (paid or free), but it can get crowded during peak seasons, so we recommend arriving early.
- Travel time from nearby locations (approximate): Approximately 1-2 hours by car from Shimonoseki or Hagi, and 1.5-2 hours from Yamaguchi City (varies depending on roads and routes).

*The number of public transport services and road conditions may change depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the latest information before setting off.

[Estimated stay (estimated time required)]
– Sightseeing and photography only: 30 minutes to 1 hour
- Relaxed photography + worship + stroll around the area: 1-2 hours
If you include taking photos, strolling around the surrounding coastline, and using the shops, you should allow about an hour and a half.

[Nearby spots]
- Tsunoshima (Tsunoshima Bridge): A tourist spot known for its stunning coastline and bridge. A spot that can easily be incorporated into a driving route.
- Omijima: An area where you can enjoy sightseeing around the steep sea cliffs on a sightseeing boat.
– Nagato Yumoto Onsen: A hot spring resort where you can stop by after sightseeing. There are also day-use bathing facilities where you can soothe your fatigue.
Other: The coastline of northern Yamaguchi Prefecture is dotted with scenic spots and restaurants where you can enjoy local cuisine, making it a great place for a road trip.

[Points to note (crowds, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)]
– Crowds: It gets especially crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, weekends, and sunsets. If you want to take photos, it's best to visit early in the morning or on a weekday.
– Traffic and Parking: Parking spaces are limited, so if the parking lot is full, you will need to wait nearby. Parking on the street and nuisance parking are strictly prohibited.
- Wind and waves: There are windy days along the cliffs, and high waves can be dangerous. Please avoid stepping outside the fences or slipping.
- Throwing coins safely: When throwing coins into the offering box on top of the torii gate, make sure there are no people around and avoid awkward positions or heights. Do not attempt to take any risk, such as going back to retrieve dropped coins.
- Manners: Shrines are religious facilities. Please refrain from shouting, littering, climbing on buildings and facilities, etc.
- Barrier-free access: The approach to the shrine has stone steps and slopes, so it may be difficult to access with a wheelchair or stroller. If you have any concerns about your physical condition, please check the situation in advance.
- Check the weather: Because it is a coastal area, the scenery and safety can change significantly depending on the weather. We recommend avoiding visiting during rainy or stormy weather.

This concludes the overview and practical information for Motonosumi Shrine. Please check the tourist season and transportation options in advance and plan your trip accordingly. If necessary, we will also create a specific access route (specifying the starting point) and a model day trip itinerary for the surrounding area. Where will you start?
