Sado Magistrate's Office (Sado City, Niigata Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Sado Magistrate's Office is a historic site and tourist facility that has been restored and renovated from the former magistrate's office, which was responsible for the administration and security of the island, including the Sado Gold Mine, during the Edo period. Sado was once under direct control of the shogunate, and control of the gold mines was a major priority, with the magistrate's office being the political center where officials carried out their work, trials were held, and criminal investigations were conducted. The current building has been restored and recreated based on historical documents and excavation surveys, and its appeal lies in the fact that you can see the structure of the office, the lifestyle, and the work of officials at that time in a life-size model. You can get an intuitive understanding of Sado during the Edo period through the atmosphere of the wooden architecture, displays of weapons and documents, explanatory panels, and video commentary.

Highlights
- Reconstructed government office building exhibits: Reconstructions of the offices of government officials, the areas where investigations and trials were conducted, and replicas of ledgers and documents. You can take a close look at the architectural details and interior layout.
- Exhibits: Old documents, drawings, tools used by officials, and explanatory materials on the administrative and judicial systems of the time.
-Explanatory panels and videos: Through the videos and explanations shown in the museum, even those without specialist knowledge can easily learn about the historical background.
- Linking with surrounding historical sites: You can gain a deeper understanding by touring the Aikawa area, Sado Gold Mine, and other historical sites closely related to the function of the magistrate's office.
- Photo Spots: You can take pictures of the traditional wooden exteriors, gates, and gardens (if restored).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Route: From the Honshu side, the main route is by ferry (car ferry/high-speed boat) from Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port (Ryotsu) on Sado Island. After arriving at Ryotsu Port, travel by car towards Aikawa on the island.
- By air: You can also fly into Sado Airport (Ryotsu Airport) (please check in advance as there are only a few flights). From the airport, you can travel by rental car or taxi.
- Transportation within the island: From Ryotsu Port, you can take a local bus (routes connecting major tourist spots), rental car, or taxi to Aikawa and the Magistrate's Office. The most convenient way to travel is by car, which takes approximately 40 to 60 minutes by car from Ryotsu Port (depending on traffic conditions).
- Parking: Visitor parking is often available around the facility, but please check the facility's information for the number of spaces and fees.
*Please check the official website or Sado City Tourist Information in advance for accurate departure and arrival times, bus routes, and parking information.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)
– Observation only: Approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
- If you want to thoroughly read the exhibits, watch the video commentary, and also visit the surrounding historical sites, it will take 1.5 to 3 hours.
– If you plan to tour the area including Sado Gold Mine in one day, you will have plenty of time if you plan on spending half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots
– Sado Gold Mine (Aikawa Gold Mine): A center of industrial history directly connected to the magistrate's office. There are tours of the mine tunnels and displays on the history of mining.
– Kitazawa Flotation Plant Ruins: An impressive group of ruins that are an industrial heritage site (access is restricted due to preservation and maintenance conditions).
- Shukunegi: A traditional fishing village where historical buildings and streetscapes remain.
– Toki Forest Park: A conservation and exhibition facility for the endangered Japanese crested ibis (recommended for animal lovers).
– Senkaku Bay/Ageshima Amusement Park: A spot where you can enjoy the coastal scenery and sightseeing boat tours.
(Travel times for both routes vary depending on the location. It is a good idea to combine these routes when planning your sightseeing.)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Check opening hours and fees: Opening hours, closing days, admission fees, and availability of special exhibitions may change depending on the season or year. Please check the official website or tourist information for the latest information before visiting.
- Transportation: As transportation options (especially public transportation) are limited on Sado, it is efficient to use rental cars or taxis for sightseeing. There are times when the number of buses is low. Plan your travels to coincide with the arrival time of the ferry.
- Crowds: It can get crowded during tourist seasons (Golden Week, summer vacation, consecutive holidays, etc.) and tour schedules. If you want to take your time looking around, consider visiting early in the morning or on a weekday.
- Clothing and footwear: As the restored buildings may have steps and narrow passageways, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. If you are to tour outdoors, please dress appropriately for the weather.
- Consideration for photography and preservation: There may be restrictions on taking photos of exhibits and indoors. Please follow the specified rules (such as no flash photography) to protect the exhibits and buildings.
- Barrier-free access: Facilities that recreate old styles often have many steps and stairs, and may not be completely barrier-free. If you require a wheelchair or assistance, it is best to inquire in advance.
– Respect the island's nature and culture: It is important to take your trash with you, be considerate of the plants and animals, and speak to and be polite to local residents.

supplement
– Please check the official website of the Sado City Tourism Association or the facility for the latest opening hours, fees, access details, and event information. If you research nearby historical sites and transportation options in advance to match your sightseeing route, you can travel efficiently and enjoy your visit.
