Sakushima Island (Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture)

TOC

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Sakushima, an island in Mikawa Bay belonging to Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, is a small remote island with a rich sea and satoyama (rural villages). Originally, the island's inhabitants made their living from fishing and salt production, but in recent years it has become popular with tourists seeking the outdoor art scattered around the island and a laid-back island lifestyle. Its seasonal natural scenery (flowers in spring, the sea in summer, evenings in autumn, and the tranquility of winter), the charm of its old villages, and seaside strolls make it a popular day trip spot.

Highlights

  • Outdoor Artworks: Sculptures and contemporary art are scattered across the island's coastlines, alleys, and hills. It's fun to explore the artworks while walking (there are both permanent and special exhibitions).
  • Coast and Beach: Peaceful coastlines and sunset views. Perfect for strolling along the water's edge and taking photos.
  • Village Walk: A village where old houses and the atmosphere of a fishing town remain. Enjoy the scenery of narrow alleys, temples, stone walls, and more.
  • Cycling: The island is small, so you can get around efficiently by renting a bicycle. The views from the coast and hilltops are great.
  • Local food: You can enjoy set meals and seafood dishes made with local fish at restaurants and guesthouses near the fishing port (depending on the season).
  • Nature observation and photography: There are plenty of photo spots with seabirds, flowers, and the distant view of Mikawa Bay in the background.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Trains and buses: The nearest major stations (approximately from Nagoya) are Meitetsu and JR stations. From each station, take a bus or taxi to the port where the ferry to Sakushima departs and arrives. The name of the port and the departure and arrival points will differ depending on the route you take, so please check in advance.
  • By car: You cannot drive directly to the island. There are often paid and free parking lots near the port, where you can park your car and board the ferry. As parking spaces are limited, we recommend arriving early on weekends and holidays.
  • Ferry: Take a regular ferry from the port (the journey usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes). The number of ferry services varies depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the timetable before setting off.
  • Note: Ferries may be canceled due to weather or sea conditions. Be sure to check local operating information and weather forecasts.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Half-day/Day Trip (3-4 hours): After arriving at the port, you can cycle or walk around the main spots. You can enjoy the scenery and art in a short amount of time.
  • Relaxed Day Trip (5-7 hours): A plan that includes leisurely strolls, lunch, and time to relax by the sea.
  • Accommodation (one night or more): If you want to enjoy the sunset, the quietness of the early morning, and the starry sky at night, we recommend staying overnight. There are not many accommodations on the island, so it is best to make a reservation in advance.

Nearby spots

  • Sightseeing in Nishio City: Nishio City is famous for its matcha (Nishio matcha). We recommend visiting the teahouses and souvenir shops.
  • Gamagori (Laguna Ten Bosch, Takeshima, etc.): A tourist destination accessible by car or public transport. Enjoy hot springs and theme parks.
  • Tourist destinations along the Mikawa Bay coast: There are scenic coastline spots, fishing port towns, and spots where you can enjoy local cuisine.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: Ferries and major spots on the island can be crowded on weekends, holidays, and during the summer beach season. We recommend taking an early morning flight or planning ahead.
  • Transportation and Operation: Ferry services are limited, so please plan your trip with plenty of time. Ferries may be canceled due to bad weather.
  • Local facilities: There are limited shops, facilities, and ATMs on the island, so it's a good idea to prepare cash and other necessary items in advance.
  • Manners: As this is a place where residents live, please take your trash home, keep noise to a minimum, and be considerate in public places. Please do not enter private property or areas where work is being carried out.
  • Safety: The coastline can be slippery in places due to the tide and rocky areas. Please bring comfortable shoes, sun protection, and drinking water. Be aware of sudden weather changes.
  • Seasonal precautions: In summer, take precautions against the sun, heat, and heatstroke when swimming in the sea. In winter, the wind can be strong and it can feel cold. Spring is the best time to see flowers, and autumn is the season for beautiful evening views.

*The names of ferry ports and times, as well as information about facilities on the island, are subject to change. Please check the Nishio City Tourism Information website or the ferry company's official website for the latest information in advance.
