Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Located in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Sasebo Port is a harbor that retains the natural beauty and atmosphere of a port town. Developed as a naval port during the Meiji period, the port has a history of being home to the former Imperial Japanese Navy's Sasebo Naval Base and shipyards. Even after the war, it developed as an important military and commercial port, with ships of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the U.S. Navy calling at the port. The port boasts an intricate network of islands, a ria coastline, and maritime scenery including the Kujukushima Islands. Tourist attractions include sightseeing boats and cruises, strolls along the harbor, and views from observation decks. It's also a convenient access point for local cuisine (like the Sasebo burger) and Huis Ten Bosch.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- There are areas around the naval port where entry and photography are restricted. When viewing Maritime Self-Defense Force or U.S. military vessels in the distance, please follow the signs and instructions of staff, and do not enter or photograph without permission.
- Observation areas and sightseeing boats are crowded during peak tourist seasons (Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and sunset times). We recommend making reservations in advance and arriving early for cruises.
- Weather: Marine activities are easily affected by wind and waves, and may be suspended or canceled in bad weather. Please check departure information in advance. Also, be careful during typhoon season (summer to autumn).
- What to wear and bring: There will be strong sea breezes on some days, so it's a good idea to bring something to wear over your clothes. Bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen) and some drinks.
- Nature conservation and etiquette: Please take your trash home with you from the island and beaches and be considerate of the plants and animals.
The area around Sasebo Port is a fascinating blend of seascapes and the history of the port town. Combining a cruise, views from observation decks, and local cuisine will make for a more fulfilling sightseeing experience.
