TOC

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Irabu Bridge, which connects Miyakojima (Hirara) and Irabujima in Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture, opened on January 31, 2015. With a total length of approximately 3,540 meters, it is known as one of the longest toll-free bridges in Japan. The sight of it crossing in a straight line over the clear blue sea is also very attractive, making it a popular spot for driving, photography, and sightseeing.

The view of the sea from the bridge is a beautiful gradation of emerald green and cobalt blue, and on clear days the view stretches far into the distance, and the impression changes dramatically with the change in light between morning and evening. The bridge has dramatically improved transportation access in the region, contributing to the promotion of tourism and convenience in life on Irabu Island.

Highlights

  • A panoramic view of the bridge stretching straight over the sea: We recommend taking panoramic photos from either end of the bridge or from a high vantage point.
  • A spectacular drive from the train window: The changing colors of the ocean as you drive are exceptional. It's especially beautiful on sunny days.
  • Spots for viewing the sunrise and sunset: The view of the sun sinking into the horizon and the sea dyed in the morning glow is photogenic.
  • Parking for photo spots: You can take photos from the observation space in front of the bridge or from the designated parking area on the side of the road. Please take photos in a safe place.
  • Clear water and shallow coral reefs: You can see the colors of the shallow waters near the surface from the air or from observation points (diving and snorkeling are available at separate spots).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

There is no train as the nearest public transportation, so air and car are the main options.

  • Nearest airport: Miyako Airport (Miyakojima) — It takes approximately 20-30 minutes by car from the airport to the bridge (depending on road conditions).
  • Car (Rental Car): Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore Miyakojima. The bridge is free to cross.
  • Taxis are available from the airport and city center. Travel time is about the same as a rental car.
  • Bus: There are routes, but they are infrequent, so please check the timetable in advance. You may have to walk from the bus stop to both ends of the bridge.
  • Cycling/walking: Pedestrians and cyclists are permitted on this road, but safety precautions (lights, reflectors, helmets, etc.) are required due to narrow sidewalks and limited shoulders.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Crossing the bridge and taking photos: If you just want to drive through and take photos, it takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Relaxing viewing from the observation deck: If you want to take photos while looking at the bridge from the observation decks on both ends, it will take 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Combine with sightseeing in the surrounding area: If you combine it with sightseeing at the surrounding beaches or Irabu Island, we recommend a half-day to full-day course.

Nearby spots

  • Yonaha Maehama Beach (Miyako Island side) — Famous for its white sand and shallow waters, it's easily accessible by car.
  • Sunayama Beach (Miyakojima) — A beach with beautiful rock and sand formations.
  • Irabu Island's various beaches (Toguchinohama, etc.) - There are also many beautiful beaches scattered on the Irabu Island side.
  • Around Shimojishima Island (aviation enthusiasts love the observation spots around Shimojishima Airport) - Please check tourist information depending on the season.
  • Hirara City (Miyakojima) — A hub with restaurants and souvenir shops.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Parking rules: Parking for long periods on the bridge or taking photos on the road may be dangerous and a violation of the rules. Please use designated observation spaces or secure parking areas for photography.
  • Traffic Safety: Speeding and sudden lane changes are extremely dangerous. Please pay attention to your side mirrors and overtaking, and obey the speed limit.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle safety: There are places where the sidewalks and shoulders are narrow. If you are crossing by bicycle or on foot, be sure to take safety precautions such as wearing bright clothing, reflective materials, and a helmet.
  • Busy periods: Golden Week, summer (July to August), and the New Year's holiday season are busier with tourists. Early morning and evening hours can be busy with photographers.
  • Weather and sea conditions: Roads may be dangerous or closed during strong winds, rain, or when a typhoon is approaching. Please check the weather information, especially during typhoon season (June to October).
  • Drone and photography restrictions: There are restrictions on flying drones near airports and densely populated areas. Please be aware of the airspace surrounding Shimojishima Airport and other areas, and check the necessary permits and rules.
  • Consideration for Nature and the Environment: To protect the natural environment of the ocean and shorelines, please be sure to take any trash with you and avoid restricted areas and coral reefs.

Irabu Bridge is a must-see spot for tourists visiting the Miyako Islands due to its easy access and beautiful scenery. Please enjoy the view of the sea and bridge while being mindful of safety and etiquette.
