Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Mount Ibuki is a 1,377m-high mountain located northeast of Lake Biwa on the border between Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture. It has long been the setting for mountain worship and legends, and is known for its seasonally changing landscapes and abundant alpine plants. From spring to early summer, a variety of alpine plants bloom in the grasslands, and in autumn, the clear air offers panoramic views of Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountains. One of its attractions is that it can be enjoyed throughout the year, with the Ibukiyama Driveway accessible by car from the base of the mountain, hiking routes, and a ski resort in winter.
Highlights
- View from the summit: On a clear day, you can see Lake Biwa, the Suzuka Mountains, and if conditions are good, you can even see Mount Fuji in the distance. The 360-degree panoramic view is a real draw.
- Alpine plant communities: Many alpine plants can be seen, such as Thymus vulgare and Dicentra, and are particularly worth seeing during the flowering season from June to July.
- Ibukiyama Driveway: You can access the high altitude points by car, and easily take walks and photos near the summit (please note the opening periods).
- Hiking routes: There are multiple hiking trails for beginners to advanced climbers, allowing you to enjoy day hikes and full-scale mountain climbing. The trail on the Sekigahara side in particular has a historical atmosphere.
- Skiing and winter sports: Ski resorts are open during the winter, making it a base for winter leisure activities (operations vary depending on snow conditions).
