Sengokuhara Susuki Grass Field (Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo District, Kanagawa Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Sengokuhara is a plateau area in the northeastern part of the Hakone outer rim, famous for its golden-hued landscape in autumn, where Japanese pampas grass grows in clusters all over the place. Hakone's topography, formed by volcanic activity, and its wetland and grassland environment have nurtured the growth of Japanese pampas grass over the years, and as one of Hakone's representative seasonal landscapes, it has long attracted many tourists and photography enthusiasts. On clear days, Mount Fuji can be seen in the distance, and the vast grasslands, which change appearance with the morning and evening light, are beloved as a "Hakone autumn staple."
Highlights

- Crowds: During the peak viewing period (especially from mid-October to early November), weekends, and holidays, the area can be extremely crowded. We recommend visiting early in the morning or on a weekday.
- Manners: The plants in the grassland are very delicate. It is strictly forbidden to step into restricted areas or off the walking paths, or to break or take away any pampas grass.

- Safety: Ticks may be found in the grass. Wear long sleeves and long pants, use insect repellent, and check your clothes when you get home.
- Weather: Strong winds and bad weather can make it difficult to take photos or walk around the area. Please cooperate with environmental conservation by strictly prohibiting open flames and always taking your trash with you.
- Access restrictions: Restrictions may be put in place due to events, conservation work, or volcanic activity. Please check the latest information from Hakone Town or the tourist information center in advance.
