Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Nakijin Castle Ruins are the remains of a castle (gusuku) from the Ryukyu Kingdom era, located in Nakijin Village in the northern part of Okinawa's main island. Believed to have been built around the 14th century, it once played an important role as the base of the Hokuzan King. It is characterized by its magnificent ramparts made of piled coral limestone, its curved enclosures, and the ocean views from its elevated grounds, and was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as "Gusuku and Related Properties of the Ryukyu Kingdom."
Its charm lies in the beauty of the stone walls that give a sense of the weight of history, the view of the East China Sea spreading out below, and the scenery that changes with the seasons (especially the Kanhizakura cherry blossoms in early spring). You can get a close-up look at the remains of the castle, so you can get a real feel for Okinawa's history from ancient times to the early modern period.
