Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Nima Sand Museum (Oda City, Shimane Prefecture) is a unique museum themed around sand and time. Centered around a gigantic hourglass, said to be one of the largest in the world, the museum hosts permanent and special exhibitions that introduce the properties of sand and the culture and art surrounding it. The hourglass is known for its mechanism for measuring one year, and its greatest appeal is that it allows visitors to experience the concept of time and the workings of nature through the flow of sand. The museum is equipped with explanatory exhibits, an experience corner, a museum shop, and more, making it enjoyable for both children and adults.
Highlights
- Giant Hourglass (one of the largest in the world) - A large device that measures the length of a year by the amount of sand that falls. You can see the actual scale of the device and its internal mechanism. It is also known for the annual event where the sand is turned over.
- Panels and specimens related to sand are on display, explaining the characteristics and formation process of sand from around the world, as well as geological information. You can also compare the differences in sand color and grain size.
- Art exhibits and special exhibitions - There are regular special exhibitions and exhibitions of works by artists that use sand and time as their themes, making it a visual treat.
- Experience Corner/Workshops - The attraction is that you can learn by doing things with your hands through sand crafts and hands-on programs (depending on the season and circumstances).
- Museum shop and rest area - You can find original goods and souvenirs, and relax in the cafe space.
