Kushimoto Marine Park (Kushimoto Town, Wakayama Prefecture) is an underwater park where visitors can see lush coral reefs and diverse marine life thanks to the blessings of the Kuroshio Current. It offers a variety of facilities and activities that allow visitors to get up close and personal with the ocean, including an underwater observation tower, a glass-bottom boat, and diving and snorkeling experiences, making it enjoyable for people of all ages. Facing the Pacific Ocean, this area is home to a mix of temperate and subtropical organisms due to the influence of warm currents, making it a popular spot for observing rare ecosystems, even within Japan.
Highlights
- Underwater observation tower (underwater observation room): From the observation window located below sea level, you can observe the coral reefs and schools of fish up close. Another attractive feature is that the view changes depending on the waves and time of day.
- Glass-bottom boat: A glass-bottom boat from which you can observe the coral and tropical fish underwater. Please note that the tour may be cancelled in bad weather, so please check beforehand.
- Experience diving and snorkeling: There is an experience program for beginners, and you can safely explore the underwater world accompanied by an instructor. Depending on the season, the water is highly transparent and the conditions are ideal.
- Playing and observing on the rocksAt low tide, you can observe small fish and other creatures on the coastal rocks. This is a popular experience for families.
- Exhibition corner and museum: There are exhibits on marine ecology and conservation, making it an easy place to visit for educational purposes.

- Nearest station: Kushimoto Station on the JR Kisei Main Line (Kinokuni Line)
- Travel from the station: The most common ways to get there from Kushimoto Station are by local bus, taxi, or rental car. Travel time varies depending on the mode of transportation and time of day, but it's generally about 10 to 20 minutes by car. Buses run infrequently, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.
- By car: Accessible from the Hanwa Expressway and Nanki area. Parking is available around the facility (please note that there is a limited number of spaces, so it may be full during peak hours).
- Note: The operation of glass-bottom boats and other attractions may be restricted depending on the season and weather. Please check official information and local guides for the latest operating status.

- Hashigui Rock: A group of strangely shaped rocks on the sea near Kushimoto. The beautiful morning and evening scenery makes it a popular photo spot.
- Cape Shionomisaki and Cape Shionomisaki Lighthouse: A cape near the southernmost tip of Honshu. It has an observation deck and walking trails, and offers a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean.
- Kushimoto Onsen - Local Seafood RestaurantAfter playing in the sea, you can enjoy a hot spring bath and fresh seafood. Tuna and local shellfish are local specialties.
- Nearby diving spots: There are diving shops scattered around the area, and there are also spots for those who want to do more serious diving.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Busy period: It tends to get crowded during the summer holidays (July to August), Golden Week, and weekends over consecutive holidays. We recommend making reservations early for glass-bottom boats and other experience programs.
- Weather and sea conditions: On days with strong winds or waves, or in bad weather, the observation tower and boats may be closed or suspended. Please check the official website or call before visiting for the latest information.
- Safety measures：When snorkeling or playing on the rocks, be careful of currents and slippery rocks, even in shallow waters. Keep an eye on children.
- Ocean etiquette and conservation：Please observe environmental protection rules such as not touching the corals or marine life, not taking shells or corals home, and always taking your trash with you. Be careful not to damage the corals with your fins or equipment.
- What to wear and what to bring: In the season when the sun is strong, prepare a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. If you are going snorkeling or diving, please bring clothes that you don't mind getting wet, a change of clothes, and a towel.
