Shimonoseki Kaikyokan is a large aquarium facing the Kanmon Strait in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It introduces the diverse marine life that inhabits the Kanmon Strait, the Seto Inland Sea, and the Sea of Japan, and was developed as a place to deepen understanding of the region's marine resources and environmental conservation. The aquarium's unique feature is that visitors can experience the marine ecosystem through dolphins, sea lions, penguins, and a touch pool, focusing on creatures that live in the local seas. The exhibits also allow visitors to experience the fascinating currents of the Kanmon Strait and seasonal migratory fish up close, making it a popular tourist destination.

- Nearest stationFrom JR Shimonoseki Station, take a city bus bound for Karato/Kaikyokanmae for about 10 minutes, or walk for about 20-25 minutes (the walking route includes hills and seaside walks, so the required time may vary).
- By Shinkansen: Approximately 15-20 minutes by bus or taxi from Shin-Shimonoseki Station (Shinkansen).
- Ferries and ships: You can also access it from Kitakyushu (Moji Port) by taking the Kanmon Kisen ferry. From the port, travel to the Karato area.
- car: Approximately 15-25 minutes from Shimonoseki IC on the Chugoku Expressway (depending on road conditions). Paid parking is available around the hotel. Please allow plenty of time during peak traffic periods.

- congestion: Weekends, consecutive holidays, summer vacation, and tourist seasons tend to be crowded, and you may have to wait for parking or to get in. If you want to avoid the crowds, it's best to go on a weekday or early in the morning.
- Check show and feeding times: Dolphin shows and penguin feedings have set times, so it's best to check the schedule in advance to ensure a smooth experience.
- Consideration and Manners for Animals: Please refrain from directly feeding the animals on display, excessive contact with them, and using flash photography. Please follow the instructions in the aquarium and from the zookeepers.
- Strollers and wheelchairs: Although some areas of the museum are barrier-free, there may be restrictions on movement depending on the corridors and exhibits. If you need assistance, please contact the facility in advance.
