Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Shimonada Station is an unmanned local station on the JR Yosan Line located in Iyo City, Ehime Prefecture (near the former Futami Town), characterized by its platform facing the sea. The view of the platform and the Seto Inland Sea from up close is known as one of "Japan's most beautiful stations," and the view at sunset has become popular nationwide. While it was once used as a commuter line for the local area, in recent years it has gained attention as a tourist destination, photography enthusiasts, and a filming location for movies and commercials, resulting in an increasing number of visitors.
Highlights
- Ocean view from the platform: The Seto Inland Sea and horizon stretch out right next to the tracks. The view is particularly spectacular when the sun sinks into the sea.
- Nostalgic station building and platform: The simple wooden station building and benches retain an old-fashioned atmosphere, giving you a taste of the Showa era.
- Photo spot: A popular photo is one that captures the train and the sea together as it approaches. The light in the early morning or evening is particularly beautiful.
- Local scenery and local life: There are few high-rise buildings in the surrounding area, and the rustic fishing village scenery and coastline are another attractive feature.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Train: Get off at Shimonada Station on the JR Yosan Line. Only local trains stop at this station, so we recommend checking the timetable in advance. If you are coming from Matsuyama, please check the connections from Matsuyama Station.
- By car: You can access the area by using national and prefectural roads, but there are limited parking spaces around the station, so if they are full you will need to park a little further away and walk.

- Please note: Trains are infrequent and can be particularly crowded at dusk, so be sure to check your return transportation (last train or bus).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The area is particularly crowded with tourists and photographers in the evenings (at sunset) and on weekends and holidays. When taking photos, please be considerate of other visitors by not using tripods or reserving a spot.
- As this is an unmanned station, facilities are simple: toilets and food and drink facilities may be limited. It is a good idea to prepare anything you need in advance.
- Safety precautions: Please avoid entering or taking photos near the platform or tracks, and avoid taking dangerous poses. There are some places where the sea breeze and rocks can be slippery.
- Parking/Street Parking: Parking spaces around the station are limited, so please use designated parking lots and do not park on the street or on private property without permission.
- Seasonal precautions: Beware of strong winds and high waves in winter and spring when the weather is rough. In summer, the sun is strong, so be sure to bring a hat and water.
- Drone use: Please observe the law and rules when using drones to take photographs, so as not to disturb local residents or other tourists. There may be no-fly zones.
Shimonada Station is a spot where you can enjoy impressive scenery even in a short time. Please check the transportation options and timetables before visiting, and be mindful of your surroundings while enjoying the beautiful sea and sunset.
