Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Nanao Castle is the remains of a mountain castle built on Shiroyama (commonly known as Shiroyama, a mountaintop approximately 200-300m above sea level) in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Built as a base for the clan that ruled Noto Province (present-day Noto Peninsula) during the Sengoku period, it is known as a "large mountain castle ruin" with multiple enclosures, earthworks, moats, and stonework remains remaining over a wide area. The castle ruins offer a panoramic view of Nanao Bay, and the view of the castle and the sea as one is captivating.
Historically, it is deeply connected to regional rule and battles during the Sengoku period, and there are many clues remaining to learn about the castle technology and regional rule of the time. The remains on the mountain, covered in natural forest, show different faces throughout the seasons, and are particularly worth seeing during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves.
Highlights
- Remains of the main enclosures, including the Honmaru and Ninomaru: The view from the main enclosure (the remains of the Honmaru) near the summit is outstanding. You can observe the layout of the remains and the structure of the mountain castle, including the earthworks and moats, up close.
- Traces of stonework and stone walls: The partially remaining stonework and foundation stones give a glimpse of the construction techniques of the time. Some areas are well preserved.
- Moats, earthworks, and vertical moats: A series of defensive structures unique to mountain castles remain, allowing visitors to learn about the defensive thinking of the Sengoku period. There are often information boards along the walking routes.
- Observation point: The view overlooking Nanao Bay and the city of Nanao is a great photo spot. On clear days, the blue of Noto Island and the ocean shines.
- Harmony between nature and historical sites: A landscape created by the seasonal vegetation (fresh greenery in spring, autumn leaves, and snowy scenery in winter) and castle ruins.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: During the main tourist seasons (cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, long weekends, and summer), hiking trails and observation points can become crowded. If you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting early in the morning.
- Clothing and equipment: The mountain trails are steep, muddy, and slippery in places. Please bring trekking shoes or non-slip sneakers, warm and rain gear, drinking water, and insect repellent. In winter, freezing and snow make the trail more dangerous, so proper equipment and experience are required.
- Footing and safety: Some parts of the ruins are prone to collapse, so there may be areas off-limits. Please follow signs and ropes wherever possible.
- Manners: Please observe basic etiquette for protecting nature and historic sites, such as taking your trash with you, not damaging the ruins, and not picking plants. When taking photographs, please be considerate and not disturb others.
- Precautions regarding flora and fauna: Insects (especially ticks) and mosquitoes appear in the summer. Long sleeves and insect repellent are recommended. In winter, be careful of frozen roads.
- Check the information: Opening status, trail maintenance, bus operation, etc. may change depending on the season and local government circumstances. Please check the latest information at the Nanao City Tourist Information Center or official website before visiting.
(Note) For more information about the history and ruins, the contents of the information boards, whether tours are available, etc., please visit the local museum or tourist information center.
