Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Moerenuma Park is a vast comprehensive park in Sapporo's Higashi Ward, known for its overall design by American sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi. The area around Moerenuma, which was originally reclaimed land and reclaimed land, was redeveloped and opened in 2005 under the concept of "the whole is sculpture," integrating nature and sculpture (landscape art). With a glass pyramid, an artificial mountain (Mount Moere), a vast lawn and fountain, this space where art and nature come together is popular with locals and tourists alike for strolling, photography, picnics and as an event venue.

Highlights

  • Glass pyramid "HIDAMARI": A unique glass building with exhibition space, a multipurpose hall, a cafe, and more, the building itself is a must-see (exhibitions inside change seasonally).
  • Mount Moere: An artificial observation hill. Climbing the stairs and promenade will take you to a viewpoint overlooking Sapporo city and the Ishikari Plain. The scenery changes with the seasons, and the sunsets and snowy scenery are particularly beautiful.
  • Earth Sculpture/Landscape: The park is dotted with terrain and sculptures based on Noguchi's ideas. The wide lawns and smooth slopes are popular play areas and photo spots.
  • Fountain (Summer Event): In the summer, a large-scale fountain show is held, attracting many families (the schedule changes every year).
  • Seasonal expressions: There are different ways to enjoy the park throughout the year, from cherry blossoms in spring, greenery in summer, autumn leaves, and snowy scenery in winter. In winter, there are also areas where you can play in the snow and go sledding.
