Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Heavens Sonohara is a highland leisure facility located in Achi Village, Shimoina District, Nagano Prefecture. Visitors can take a ropeway to the top of the mountain to enjoy the view of a "heavenly paradise," night tours (stargazing), and skiing and snow activities in the winter. Achi Village is known nationwide as an area boasting "Japan's best starry sky," and the starry sky seen from the summit of Heavens Sonohara is particularly popular. In recent years, the facility has been attracting increasing attention as a tourist destination, with an expanded range of experiential content, including "night tours," guided commentary on the starry sky, and illuminations.

Highlights

  • Sky View/Panoramic: If you take the ropeway to the high-altitude observation area, you can enjoy the view of the Southern Alps and other mountains, as well as Achi Village spreading out below. The scenery changes with the seasons (fresh greenery, flowers, autumn leaves, snowscapes), making it a beautiful sight.
  • Starry Night Tour (Paradise in the Sky): A guided stargazing tour. Includes stargazing commentary at the summit, guidance using telescopes and laser pointers, and musical performances, making it easy for even beginners to enjoy the starry sky (the tour period and times vary depending on the season and weather).
  • Ski and snow resorts (winter): There are ski and snowboard courses and facilities for beginners to intermediate skiers. Night skiing and snow play areas are sometimes available.
  • Highland Walks and Flower Season: From spring to early summer, it is attractive as a spot for flowers and peach blossoms, in summer it is a good place to escape the heat and go trekking, and in autumn it is a place for autumn leaves.
  • Event illuminations: There are seasonal events and night illuminations, so you can enjoy special displays depending on when you visit.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest stationThe nearest major station is Iida Station on the JR Iida Line, as well as other stations in the area. Access from the station is possible by bus or taxi, but the number of buses and schedules may change depending on the season, so we recommend checking in advance.
  • Access by carAccess: Take the Chuo Expressway or the local roads heading towards Ina and Iida. It takes approximately 2 hours from Nagoya and 3-4 hours from Tokyo (depending on traffic). There is a parking lot near the facility's ropeway station (charges apply and it may be crowded depending on the season).
  • Local buses and shuttles: During stargazing season and long holidays, special shuttle buses may operate from the nearest station or major cities. Please check the official website or tourist association for details on whether the bus is running and the departure and arrival times.
  • ropeway: The main means of transportation at the facility is the ropeway. You will need to transfer to the ropeway to reach the summit. Operating times vary depending on the season and weather, so please check in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Night tour (stargazing):The tour takes approximately 2-3 hours, including the meeting point, round trip on the ropeway, and observation at the summit. Depending on the tour content, it may take a little longer.
  • Daytime sightseeing (ropeway and strolling): Approximately 1-2 hours including the view from the summit and a stroll. If you plan to eat, take photos, or do some light hiking in the surrounding area, half a day to a full day is recommended.
  • Ski and snow season: If you plan on skiing, you can spend half a day to a full day (full-time plan is a full day). If you plan on staying overnight, you can enjoy the resort with plenty of time.

Nearby spots

  • Hirugami Hot Springs: Achi Village's most famous hot spring resort. Perfect for relaxing and soothing your fatigue after stargazing.
  • Hanamomo no Sato (Hanamomo Festival): This is an area where peach blossoms are beautiful in spring. If you visit at the right time, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the flowers.

  • Tourist farms, roadside stations, etc.: There are facilities in the surrounding area where you can enjoy local specialties and meals. Seasonal fruit picking is also available.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Influence of weather and visibilityStargazing is greatly affected by the weather and cloud cover. Observation may be canceled or changed on rainy, cloudy, or windy days, so be sure to check the weather forecast and facility operation status for the day.
  • Cold weather measures:The summit is at a high altitude and it gets cold. It gets particularly cold at night, so be sure to bring a jacket and warm clothing regardless of the season (it is very cold in winter).
  • Crowds and reservations: It gets crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, consecutive holidays, and peak stargazing seasons. Advance reservations are recommended for night tours and experience programs. There will also be waiting times for the ropeway, so plan well in advance.
  • Manners: Quietness is required during nighttime observations. Please refrain from using flashes or strong lights as they can interfere with stargazing, and please be considerate of other observers.
  • Equipment and safety: It is a good idea to bring comfortable walking shoes, rain gear, a headlamp (when traveling at night), portable food and water, etc. In winter, you will especially need to take measures against snowy and icy roads.
  • Check for the latest information: Opening hours, operation status, and event information change with the seasons. Please check the official website or the Achi Village Tourist Association for the latest information before visiting.

Heavens Sonohara is an attractive spot with mountain scenery during the day, stunning starry skies at night, and seasonal activities. You can enjoy it more comfortably by creating a visit plan (day trip/overnight stay, daytime sightseeing/night tour) according to your purpose, making reservations in advance, and taking appropriate clothing and weather precautions.
