Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Farm Tomita is a lavender tourist farm representing the Furano/Nakafurano area of Hokkaido. Run by the Tomita family, the farm has cultivated colorful flower fields centered around lavender cultivation, and has become known nationwide as a tourist destination. The lavender blooming in profusion across the vast hills captivates visitors with its fragrance and beautiful scenery. The farm features walking trails, observation points, a directly managed shop and cafe selling lavender-related processed products (lavender soft serve ice cream, dried flower products, essential oils, etc.), and is characterized by the fact that you can enjoy not only the flowers but also food and souvenirs.

Highlights

  • Lavender fields: In season (late June to early August), a purple carpet spreads across the ground. Each variety blooms at a different time and in different colors, and the sight of the flowers changing in appearance is a highlight.
  • Photo Spots: The observation deck on the hill and the rows of lavender are great photo spots. The morning and evening light makes for beautiful photos.
  • Direct sales of lavender products: essential oils (aroma oils), potpourri, handmade goods, lavender soft serve ice cream and juice, and other processed and limited edition products that can only be purchased here.
  • Experiences and Events: Depending on the season, lavender picking experiences, workshops, and harvesting events may be held (please check the schedule and details).
  • Colorful flower fields: In addition to lavender, seasonal flowers such as poppies, sunflowers, and cosmos are planted, creating a colorful landscape.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest train station: JR Furano Line, Nakafurano Station or Furano Station. From Nakafurano Station, it's about a 10-minute taxi ride, and from Furano Station, it's about a 15-25 minute drive (depending on traffic).
  • Buses: During the summer (tourist season), sightseeing buses and local buses that travel around Furano and Biei may make temporary stops. Please check the latest schedules and routes at the Furano Tourist Information Center.
  • By private car or rental car: Approximately 2-3 hours from Sapporo, and approximately 1 hour from Asahikawa. There is a parking lot on the premises, but it can get crowded during the peak season, so we recommend arriving early (parking may be subject to a fee).
  • Sightseeing tours: During the peak summer season, there are many sightseeing bus and day tour plans departing from the Furano area.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 30 minutes to 1 hour (mainly photography and walking around)
  • Enjoy at your own pace: 1.5 to 2.5 hours (including use of the shop/cafe, purchasing merchandise, and a stroll around the observation deck)
  • Combining it with experiences and sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (we recommend a plan that combines sightseeing with other sightseeing spots in the area)

Nearby spots

  • Shikisai no Oka (Biei) - A popular spot with colorful flower fields (approximately 30-40 minutes by car).
  • Furano Cheese Factory - A facility where you can experience cheese making and tasting (approximately 15-20 minutes by car).
  • Ningle Terrace (near Shin Furano Prince Shopping Center) – A walking spot lined with forest accessory shops (approximately 15-20 minutes by car).
  • Furano Wine Factory/Winery - You can taste and purchase wine made from Hokkaido grapes.
  • Biei's Patchwork Road and Blue Pond (Shirogane) - tourist attractions within a day trip by car.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The lavender blooming season (especially mid-July) can be very busy. Arriving early in the morning (right after opening) will make it less crowded and easier to take photos.
  • Manners: There are areas in the fields that are off-limits. Please follow the fences and signs to avoid damaging the flowers and plants. Picking flowers or taking them home is prohibited as a general rule.
  • Footing and clothing: Many of the paths in the park are dirt or gravel, and some areas can become muddy after rain. Please bring comfortable shoes and warm clothing (it is a mountainous area, so it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings).
  • Weather: The weather in Hokkaido is changeable and can suddenly get cold even in summer. It's a good idea to bring sun protection (hat and sunscreen) and insect repellent (especially in the evenings).
  • Store and parking lot opening and closing times: Opening hours vary by facility. Some facilities may have reduced hours or be closed during the off-season and winter, so be sure to check the official website in advance for the latest information.
  • Photography and commercial use: Personal photography is generally not an issue, but commercial use and drone photography may require prior permission. Please check the terms of use.

To ensure a pleasant visit, check the official website or tourist information for the latest flowering status, opening hours, and access information before your visit. Enjoy the seasonal colors and scent of lavender.
