Jade Coast (Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Jade Coast is a stretch of coastline along the Sea of Japan coast in Itoigawa City, and as its name suggests, it is known nationwide for the jadeite that washes up on shore. The Itoigawa area is located in the Fossa Magna, an area with a geologically diverse range of exposed rocks, meaning that a lot of gravel washes up on the coast, sometimes mixed with jadeite. Jadeite has been collected locally since ancient times, and has a historical background that suggests it was used in magatama (comma-shaped beads) from the Jomon period, and it is now attracting attention as a tourist resource.
Its distinctive features include a coastline dominated by pebbles (pebbles), the discovery of jadeite stones washed by the waves, and the beautiful scenery of the Sea of Japan and mountain ranges in the distance. Many people visit for the purpose of beachcombing (picking up stones), and it is also popular as a spot to watch the sunset.
Highlights
- Beachcombing — Jadeite stones come in a variety of colors and shapes. Beginners can easily find them by looking for pebbles with a greenish sheen.
- Scenery and sunsets — The contrast between the sun setting over the Sea of Japan and the pebble beach is beautiful, making it a popular photo spot.
- Itoigawa Geopark related spots - There are geologically interesting outcrops and information boards in the surrounding area, which can be enjoyed in conjunction with geotours and museums (such as the Fossa Magna Museum).
- The coastline around Oyashirazu and Koyashirazu is home to dynamic coastal terrain and observation spots.
- Playing and strolling on the rocks — Enjoy strolling along the water's edge and observing the rocks (but safety must come first).
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR Itoigawa Station (connected to the Hokuriku Shinkansen and conventional lines).
- Travel from the station: From Itoigawa Station, it will take approximately 10 to 30 minutes by local bus, tourist bus, or taxi, depending on the coastal area you are heading to. There are some points that can be accessed on foot, but the coast is quite wide, so be sure to check your destination in advance.
- By car: Take the Hokuriku Expressway (nearest IC) and head towards the site via national and prefectural roads. There are several parking lots (both free and paid) scattered around the site. During peak seasons, the parking lots may fill up, so we recommend arriving early.
- Bus times and operation information change depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the latest information from the Itoigawa City Tourism Association or the train and bus companies before setting off.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Harvesting rules and etiquette: Small-scale jadeite harvesting by individuals is common, but there may be restricted or protected areas. Large excavations and the use of tools are strictly prohibited, and care must be taken not to damage plants or the terrain. If you have any questions about jadeite harvesting, please check in advance with the Itoigawa City Tourism Association.
- Safety measures: The gravel beach is unstable and prone to falling, and is extremely dangerous when the waves are high. Do not go near the sea at high tide or in stormy weather, and children and the elderly should take particular care.
- Weather and season: In winter, access can be difficult due to rough weather, strong winds, large waves, and snow. On the other hand, new jadeite can be washed ashore during the rough winter waves, but it's best not to push yourself too hard. In summer, the sun is strong, so be sure to take precautions against UV rays. Don't forget to take precautions against insects and heatstroke.
- Crowds: The number of tourists increases on weekends, holidays, and in the summer, and parking lots may fill up quickly. Visiting early in the morning or on a weekday will give you a more relaxed experience.
- Garbage and Environmental Conservation: Please be sure to take any food or drink trash home with you or dispose of it in designated areas. To protect the coastal ecosystem, please limit the amount of shells and living creatures you take home to a minimum and be considerate of those around you.
- Guidance and information gathering: If you are visiting for the first time, checking the Itoigawa Tourism Association information center and Geopark information will ensure a safe and efficient experience.
Jade Coast is a place where you can enjoy the fun of "treasure hunting" created by nature and the magnificent scenery of the Sea of Japan at the same time. Please enjoy the charms of each season while observing safety and good manners.
