Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Sapporo Beer Garden is an affiliated facility of Sapporo Beer in Higashi-ku, Sapporo, and is a tourist spot that combines the Sapporo Beer Museum, where you can learn about the history and brewing process of beer, and the Sapporo Beer Garden (beer hall), where you can enjoy Jingisukan (lamb teppanyaki) and freshly brewed beer. Sapporo Beer is one of Japan's leading beer brands, originating in Hokkaido, and the facility features exhibits on the brand's history, old brewing equipment, and reproduction labels.

Its distinctive features include a brick building that retains the atmosphere of the time and a lively dining experience in a large beer hall. The combination of "Genghis Khan + freshly brewed beer" is especially popular with both tourists and locals, allowing you to experience Hokkaido's unique food and beer culture all at once.

Highlights

  • Exhibits at the Sapporo Beer Museum: The history of the brewery's founding, the brewing process, and old labels and machinery are on display. You can learn about the beer production process in an easy-to-understand way.
  • Tasting: You can try limited edition beers and seasonal products at the tasting corner inside the building or at paid tastings (it is recommended to check in advance as the contents change depending on the season).
  • Genghis Khan cuisine: Genghis Khan is a specialty of beer halls. It has a lively atmosphere that can be enjoyed by large groups, and it pairs perfectly with beer. All-you-can-eat plans and single-item orders are often available.
  • Building and atmosphereThe red brick exterior, spacious hall, and exhibition space reminiscent of an old brewery make for great photos.
  • Souvenirs and Shops: Beer, merchandise, and limited edition products are sold here, making it a convenient place to look for souvenirs.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Higashi-kuyakusho-mae Station on the Toho Subway Line or JR Sapporo Station are easily accessible by bus or taxi. If walking, it may take about 15 to 25 minutes from the station (this may vary depending on the station and starting point).
  • Bus: Accessible by local bus from Sapporo Station. Please check the route and timetable in advance.
  • By car: There is a paid parking lot at the facility. However, it may be full during busy times, so we recommend using public transportation or arriving at an appropriate time.
  • Taxi: It is approximately a 10-15 minute taxi ride from central Sapporo (Sapporo Station/Odori) (depending on traffic conditions).
  • Note: Access methods and travel times vary greatly depending on the departure point and time of day, so please check the official website and public transportation information for the latest information before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Museum visit + tasting: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Genghis Khan + beer meal: 1-2 hours (varies depending on group and course contents)
  • If you plan to visit the museum and enjoy a meal together, you should aim for a total of 2-3 hours.

Nearby spots

  • Sapporo Factory (large commercial facility, shopping and dining): Located close by car or public transportation, it's convenient for shopping and cafe breaks.
  • Odori Park and Sapporo TV Tower (popular tourist spots): Recommended as a walking course once you get to the city center.
  • Moerenuma Park (Nature and Art Park): A popular, spacious park accessible by car. Enjoy seasonal scenery.
  • Sapporo city center (Susukino, Clock Tower, etc.): Sightseeing and night strolls are available.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: It tends to get crowded on weekends and holidays, especially around dinner time and during peak tourist seasons (summer, New Year's, etc.). If you want to be sure to enjoy Jingisukan, we recommend making a reservation.
  • Odor control: Because Genghis Khan involves grilling lamb directly, the smell can easily get on your clothes. If you are concerned about the smell, it's a good idea to bring a plastic jacket and a change of clothes just in case.
  • Manners: Sharing among a large group is the basic style. Please enjoy your meal by sharing with those around you when using chopsticks and tongs, and by sharing the doneness of the food. Please observe drinking etiquette and the prohibition on underage drinking. There is a Japanese-style "Osaku" (pouring sake) culture, but please refrain from forcing others to do so.
  • Language and Guidance: Although there are some English signs and support, when it gets busy, support will mainly be in Japanese. If necessary, it's a good idea to prepare English information and a translation app in advance.
  • Seasonal precautions: In winter, you need to prepare for the cold throughout Sapporo (traffic delays due to frozen roads and snow). In summer, it's the tourist season and it gets crowded, but beer tastes even better.
  • Payment and Reservation: Credit card acceptance and reservation availability vary depending on the facility or hall. Please check the official website in advance.

We recommend checking the official website or social media for the latest opening hours, closing days, menu, and reservation information before your visit. Take your time to enjoy a rich, freshly brewed beer and Hokkaido's signature Jingisukan.
