Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Stork Homeland Park is a park in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, that utilizes the natural environment surrounding it and a base facility for the protection, breeding and reintroduction of Oriental white storks (Japanese storks, East Asian storks) to protect them. Aiming to revive Oriental white storks, which disappeared from the wild in Japan in the latter half of the 20th century, Toyooka City has been promoting the establishment of breeding techniques, bird release and establishment projects, and agricultural methods that can coexist with storks (such as "stork-nurturing farming methods")

The park is equipped with breeding and rearing facilities, observation facilities, an exhibition hall, an observation observatory, and areas that recreate rice fields and wetlands, and its greatest appeal is being able to learn about conservation efforts and ecology up close. The rural scenery, where artificial nesting towers and released birds are nurturing, is photogenic and can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, from families to birdwatchers.

Highlights

  • Observation Center/Exhibition Hall: Panels and videos introduce the ecology of storks and the path to their reintroduction. There are records of breeding and release, and explanations of conservation activities, and the exhibits are easy to understand even for beginners.
  • Tour of breeding and rearing facilities: You may be able to observe the storks and chicks being raised from a distance (please follow the facility's instructions on how to observe).
  • Artificial nest tower and outdoor rice field observation: You can observe the nest towers used by the returning birds, as well as the rice fields and wetlands where the storks feed. If you time it right, you may have a chance to see them feeding and flying.
  • Walking paths and observation decks: From the walking paths and observation deck within the park, you can get a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and the habitat of storks. It is also a great place to observe nature throughout the seasons.
  • Experiences and Events: Guided tours, lectures, and nature experiences for children are sometimes held. It is a good idea to check the schedule in advance.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station:The nearest major station is JR Sanin Main Line (JR Toyooka Station).
  • Bus/Taxi: You may be able to access the area from Toyooka Station by local bus or community bus (please check the timetable as some routes run infrequently). Taxis are also convenient and quick.
  • car: Public transportation is limited at certain times, so it's best to visit by car. There is a limited parking lot at the park.
  • Points to noteIf you are using public transportation, please check the number of buses and their operating times in advance. Plan your transportation accordingly as buses will be crowded during observation events and breeding seasons.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short observation/walk: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Typical visit, including visits to the exhibits and animal facilities: 1-2 hours
  • If you want to take your time to see the exhibits, walk around the area, and participate in events, it will take 2-3 hours or more.

Nearby spots

  • Kinosaki Onsen: A hot spring area that represents Toyooka City. It is accessible from the park by car or public transportation, making it convenient for combining sightseeing with visiting the hot springs.
  • Genbudo Park (Genbudo): A natural scenic spot known for its unique columnar jointed rock formations. Recommended for geology lovers.
  • Izushi (Izushi soba): A tourist spot famous for its old castle town atmosphere and sara soba noodles. Enjoy historical walks and local cuisine.
  • Tajima region gourmet: You can enjoy local delicacies in the surrounding area, such as Tajima beef and local seafood.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: It tends to get crowded on weekends, public holidays, Golden Week, summer vacation, and during observation events. Parking lots may fill up and entrance to the exhibition hall may be restricted.
  • Manners:Storks are protected species. Please do not deviate from the designated observation locations and routes, observe quietly, do not get too close, and feeding or scaring them is strictly prohibited. Please follow the instructions of staff and signs.
  • photo shoot: You may take photos with a telephoto lens, but please refrain from using flash. Please be mindful to avoid disturbing wild animals.
  • Seasonal precautions: From spring to summer, they are active during breeding and chick-rearing season, but care must be taken not to disturb breeding. In summer, take measures against insects and heat, and in winter, take measures against the cold and pay attention to road conditions (snow and ice).
  • Clothing and equipment: The area around the rice fields can get muddy, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Binoculars or a telephoto lens will make observations more enjoyable.
  • Advance confirmation: Opening hours, admission fees, event information, and viewing rules may change, so please check the official website or inquiry desk for the latest information before visiting.

(Note) This is a spot where you can feel the importance of the Satoyama and countryside that coexist with storks through observation and learning. We recommend combining your visit with a one-day or one-night plan, and visiting the hot springs and famous places in the area.
