Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Garinko is a tourist icebreaker (drift ice sightseeing ship) based in Monbetsu City, Hokkaido. Its greatest attraction is the opportunity to observe the winter drift ice up close, and the powerful sounds and vibrations as the ship's hull breaks through the ice, as well as the vast expanse of drift ice visible from the deck, provide an experience that is hard to find on land. The ship is equipped with exhibits, seating, and an outdoor deck tailored to tourist needs, and while on board, guides and announcements will tell you about the formation of drift ice and the ocean. It is a tourist resource that has long been a beloved part of Monbetsu's winter scenery and is a beloved local attraction.

Highlights

  • Impressive icebreaking scene: The moment the front of the ship breaks through the drifting ice is a powerful and loud sound. You can see the ice breaking and the flying pieces up close.
  • Panoramic view from the outdoor deck: The expansive view of the drift ice and silvery white world stretches out to the horizon, making it perfect for taking photos. On clear days, you can see a fantastical sight.
  • Commentary and guide: You will be given explanations about the formation of drift ice, marine life, and Monbetsu's fishing industry and environment, so you can enjoy the tour while deepening your knowledge.
  • Seasonal scenery: Not only in winter (during the drift ice season), but even in seasons when there is no drift ice, there are cruises that allow you to enjoy coastal scenery and offshore scenery.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Departure point: Most boats depart from Monbetsu Port (a terminal in Monbetsu City). The boarding and meeting points are clearly stated on the boat ticket, so please check in advance.
  • Trains and buses: Monbetsu City is not directly connected to a major train station, so it is common to travel to Monbetsu from the nearest major JR station (e.g. Kitami Station, or other stations depending on the route you take) by local bus, express bus, or rental car. Routes and services change depending on the season and year, so please check the timetable and route in advance.
  • By car: From Sapporo, it will take several hours to drive via the Hokkaido Expressway and national highways. In winter, be careful of frozen roads and snowstorms.
  • Air: You can also use a nearby airport (e.g. Memanbetsu Airport) and travel to Monbetsu by rental car or bus.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Boarding time: Usually the journey takes about 30 to 60 minutes, but it varies depending on the cruise. Please check the reservation page or information for the required time.
  • Overall stay: Allow 1.5 to 3 hours, including arrival at the port, boarding procedures, sightseeing, and exploring the surrounding area after returning.

Nearby spots

  • Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum: A museum with exhibits related to drift ice and the northern seas. You can view videos and specimens related to drift ice and deepen your knowledge indoors.
  • Photo spots around Monbetsu Port: There are places suitable for tourist photos, such as the port scenery and the giant crab monument.
  • Nearby hot springs and roadside stations: After sightseeing, you can warm up in the hot springs, or enjoy meals and souvenirs at facilities selling local seafood.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Season and operating period: Drift ice sightseeing is seasonal. The drift ice season is generally from mid-January to late March, but this varies from year to year. Please check the operating information in advance.
  • Clothing and cold weather: The outside air is very cold and there is a strong wind, so it is essential to take measures to protect yourself from the cold. We recommend a down or windproof jacket, gloves, a hat, non-slip shoes, and removable layers of clothing.
  • Seasickness prevention: The sea can be rocky. If you are prone to seasickness, please take precautions such as taking motion sickness medication or choosing a seat carefully.
  • Crowds and reservations: During peak season, flights can become crowded and sell out. We recommend booking early, especially on weekends and holidays.
  • Safety and Manners: Please be sure to follow safety instructions, such as not entering areas other than the deck or designated areas, wearing life jackets, and following the instructions of crew members. Also, dangerous behavior such as falling onto the drift ice or taking ice home is strictly prohibited.
  • Cancellation or change of operation: Operations may be canceled or changed depending on the state of drift ice, sea conditions, and weather. Please check the latest operation information before departing.

Note: For specific departure times, boarding points, fares, and reservation methods, please check the latest information on the operating company's official website or Monbetsu City Tourist Information. The condition of the drift ice varies from year to year due to natural phenomena, but the vast expanse of drift ice is a spectacular sight that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.
