Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Washuzan Observatory is a famous scenic spot in the Kojima district of Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, offering a panoramic view of the sea and bridges. Its dynamic views of the many islands floating in the Seto Inland Sea and the Great Seto Bridge (Seto Ohashi Bridge Group) connecting Honshu and Shikoku are captivating, and it has long been known as the "Seto Scenic Beauty." Located on a hill at an altitude of around 100 meters, it is equipped with an observation deck, promenade, shops, and rest facilities, making it easy to enjoy the spectacular views. It is also a popular spot for viewing evening and night views, and the contrast between the illuminated bridge and the light on the sea surface is a highlight.

Highlights

  • Panoramic view of the Seto Ohashi Bridge: The composition of multiple bridges and supporting pillars is very impressive. Ideal for taking photos on a clear day or at dusk.
  • Beautiful scenery of many islands: Enjoy the scenery of islands scattered across the calm Seto Inland Sea, as well as fishing boats and yachts.
  • Sunset and night view: The crimson sea at sunset and the illuminated bridge at night are especially popular. Bustling with photographers and couples.
  • Walking trails around the observation deck: There are many places where you can enjoy different views from a short hike.
  • Souvenirs and Food: There is a souvenir shop and snack shop in front of the observation deck where you can purchase local seafood and Kojima Jeans-related products.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Kojima Station (Kurashiki City).
  • Bus: Take a local bus (such as Ryobi Bus) from Kojima Station to Washuzan (Washuzan Observatory), which takes about 10 to 20 minutes (please check the number of buses and times in advance).
  • Taxi: Approximately 10 minutes by taxi from Kojima Station (depending on traffic conditions).
  • By car: Access via the Setouchi Chuo Expressway or national highways. Many observation decks and parks have paid or free parking (check the number of parking spaces and fees on-site).
  • Note: The number of public transport services and parking congestion may change depending on the season and events, so please check the timetable and facility information in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • If you want to enjoy the view for a short time: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Including the observation deck, walking trails, snacks and souvenirs: 1-2 hours
  • If you want to take your time taking photos and enjoying the sunset and night view: 2 hours or more (especially if you are planning to go around sunset, allow plenty of time before and after)

Nearby spots

  • Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter (Kurashiki city center): Home to the charming storehouses and Ohara Museum of Art. Approximately 20-30 minutes by car.
  • Kojima Jeans Street (Kojima district): This area is famous for its jeans production. Recommended for shopping.
  • Shimotsui (Shimotsui Port): Enjoy the atmosphere of a fishing port, seafood shops, and strolling through the streets of Shimotsui.
  • Setouchi Ohashi Memorial Park and surrounding observation spots: There are many places where you can view the bridge and the sea from different angles.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It tends to get crowded on weekends, holidays, Golden Week, summer tourist season, and at sunset. The parking lot may fill up, so it's recommended to arrive early.
  • Weather: The view is greatly affected by the weather. Visibility is poor on hazy or rainy days, so it's best to go on a clear day or when you can expect to see a sunset.
  • Wind: As the park is located on a hill by the sea, there are days when the wind is strong. Be careful of hats and other small items that can easily be blown away.
  • Clothing and shoes: Some of the walking paths around the observation deck have stone steps and are unpaved, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes.
  • Manners: When taking photos of the scenery or taking a break, please be considerate of those around you. At night, please be careful not to obstruct the view of other visitors with lights.
  • Business hours: Shop and restroom opening hours vary depending on the season, so we recommend checking in advance.

Washuyama Observatory is a popular tourist spot where you can easily enjoy the view of the Seto Inland Sea and the Seto Ohashi Bridge. You can enjoy it more comfortably if you allow yourself plenty of time and check the weather and crowd information before heading out.
