Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park (official name: Flower Expo Memorial Park Tsurumi Ryokuchi) is a vast urban park located in Tsurumi Ward, Osaka City. It was developed as one of the venues for the 1990 International Garden and Greenery Exposition (Flower Expo/Hana Haku), and the current park was created on the site of that development. The park features an internationally diverse garden, a large lawn, a pond, playground equipment, a cycling path, a greenhouse (Sakuyakonohanakan), and more, and its greatest appeal is being able to enjoy flowers and greenery throughout the seasons. As a large green space remaining in the city, it is popular with locals and tourists alike for strolls, picnics, event viewing, and as a playground for children.

Highlights

  • Sakuyakonohanakan (greenhouse): One of the largest greenhouses in Japan. It is home to a wide variety of plants from tropical to arid regions, rare plants, and seasonal exhibits. As it is indoors, it can be enjoyed even on rainy days.
  • rose garden: A wide variety of roses are in full bloom from spring to early summer, allowing you to enjoy their fragrance and colors. It is also a popular photo spot.
  • Japanese Garden and International Garden Zone: As a remnant of the Flower Expo, there are national gardens and themed gardens, allowing you to enjoy different atmospheres while strolling around.
  • Large lawn and picnic area: A great place to relax and have a picnic. Events and flea markets are sometimes held here.
  • Pond and waterside scenery: You can observe wild birds gathering around the water and seasonal aquatic plants.
  • Playground equipment, sports facilities, cycling courses: You can stay active and have fun with sports facilities such as play equipment and tennis courts for children, as well as rental bicycles and bicycle paths.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Osaka Metro Nagahori Tsurumi-ryokuchi Line "Tsurumi-ryokuchi Station"...The park can be reached in just a few minutes on foot from the station.
  • Other access: You can also access the park by bus or taxi from JR or private railway stations (e.g., Hanaten Station). If you are coming by car, there are paid parking lots within the park or nearby, but it tends to get crowded on weekends and during peak tourist seasons, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • Facility opening and closing times: The park itself is generally open, but indoor facilities such as Sakuya Konohanakan have separate opening hours and closing days. Please check the official information of each facility before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short walk: 30 minutes to 1 hour (walking around the entrance and taking some photos)
  • A leisurely tour of the main spots: 2-3 hours (including the Sakuyakonohanakan Museum, the rose garden, and a break on the lawn)
  • Includes picnics, cycling, and event participation: Half day (3-5 hours) to full day (all day)

Nearby spots

  • Shopping streets and cafes in Tsurumi Ward: There are restaurants and shops scattered around the station, so you can stop by during your stroll.
  • Easy access to major tourist spots in Osaka City: By transferring to the subway on the Nagahori Tsurumi-ryokuchi Line, you can easily travel to Umeda and Namba.
  • Local Parks and Historic Sites: Other parks and local historic sites are located near Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park and can be explored on foot or by bike.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: The park sees many visitors during cherry blossom season, the rose viewing season (spring to early summer), the autumn tourist season, weekends, and public holidays. During peak times, the parking lot and paths within the park can become congested, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Facility Use and Fire: Barbecues and other fire use are permitted only in designated areas and under certain rules. Fires are strictly prohibited outside of designated areas. Please check the park management office's guidelines in advance.
  • PetsPets are allowed, but please be mindful of etiquette, such as keeping them on a leash and cleaning up their waste. There may also be areas where pets are prohibited from entering.
  • Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety:When not on cycling routes, please be mindful of your bicycle speed and traffic, and give priority to pedestrians. When gathering in groups, please be considerate of others and do not cause a nuisance to others.
  • Insect and heat protectionIn summer, the sun is strong, the heat is intense, and there are many mosquitoes, horseflies, and other insects. It is a good idea to prepare measures against the heat (a hat, moisture), and insect repellent. In winter, the wind can be strong and there can be cold days, so dress warmly.
  • Garbage and Environmental Conservation: Please be sure to take your trash home or dispose of it in the designated area. Please cooperate in preserving the natural environment by not damaging plants or facilities.

Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park is a large green oasis in the city. Please enjoy the seasonal flowers and spacious scenery while observing good manners and having a pleasant stay.
