Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Naruto Whirlpools are large whirlpools that can be seen in the Naruto Strait, which flows between Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, and Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. They are created when the tidal currents of the Seto Inland Sea and the Kii Channel collide in the narrow strait, and their force and size change depending on the tides and the position of celestial bodies (especially the spring tides that occur around the time of the new moon and full moon). Whirlpools ranging in diameter from a few meters to as large as 10 to 20 meters can be observed, and their greatest attraction is being able to experience the dynamism of nature up close.

Highlights

  • Whirlpool Observation BoatSightseeing boats are available that allow you to see the whirlpools up close from the sea. You can experience the eddies and currents formed by the tides, as well as the swells created by the currents, from close to the surface of the water (operation and visibility are affected by the tide and weather).
  • Path of the Whirlpool: A promenade built under the bridge girders of Onaruto Bridge, where you can look down at the whirlpools through the glass windows while walking under the bridge. You can enjoy a high and impressive view.
  • A viewing spot overlooking the Onaruto Bridge: There are many photo spots where you can see the bridge and whirlpools together from the observation decks and promenades within Naruto Park. It's also worth seeing how the scenery changes with the evening and morning light.
  • Surrounding cultural and historical sites:Naruto City is close to the starting point of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, so it is recommended to also visit the surrounding temples, shrines, and historical spots.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + BusFrom JR Tokushima Station, take the JR Naruto Line to Naruto Station (approximately 30 minutes). From Naruto Station, take a local bus or taxi to Naruto Park/Tide-Watching Boat Pier (approximately 10-20 minutes).
  • carFrom Awaji Island, you can access the area by taking the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway and crossing the Onaruto Bridge. From Shikoku, you can also access the area via the Tokushima Expressway. Parking is available near Naruto Park and Uzu-no-michi (Uzu-no-michi), but may be full during peak seasons.
  • Expressway buses and long-distance buses: There are express buses from Osaka, Kobe, and Takamatsu to Tokushima, and you can also access the area by taking a bus to Tokushima Station or Naruto.
  • AirFrom Tokushima Awaodori Airport, take a limousine bus or rental car to Tokushima city, then take the JR line or bus to Naruto (it takes about 40-60 minutes from the airport to Naruto).
  • If you are using a sightseeing boat, please check the local timetable and tide chart in advance as the boarding time will be based on the tide.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Uzu no Michi (viewing only): Approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Sightseeing boat ride (round trip and sightseeing included): Approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour (depending on the boat company and course)
  • Strolling around Naruto Park and visiting the surrounding facilities (observation decks, museums, etc.): 1.5 to 3 hours
  • A day trip plan that includes visiting Awaji Island and surrounding spots such as the Otsuka Museum of Art: Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots

  • Uzu no Michi (Promenade under the Onaruto Bridge): A popular spot where you can look down on the whirlpools through a glass floor.
  • Naruto Park: A tourist park with an observation deck, walking trails, souvenir shops, and more.
  • Otsuka Museum of Art: A large art museum (in Naruto City) that recreates world-famous paintings on ceramic panels.
  • Awaji Island: You can cross the Onaruto Bridge by car and access tourist spots on Awaji Island (famous flower spots and hot springs).
  • Ryozenji Temple, the first temple of the 88 temples of Shikoku, etc. There are also many historical and cultural spots in the vicinity.

Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Check the tide table: The whirlpools are affected by the tides, so the best time to see them is around spring tides (around the new moon and full moon). Plan your observation boat trip and viewing time accordingly. Check the tide tables and timetables of the local area and each boat company in advance.
  • Weather and flight status: In the event of strong winds or high waves, the tide-sightseeing boats will be canceled. Be sure to check the operation information for bad weather. The Uzu-no-michi and observation deck may also be partially closed in bad weather to ensure safety.
  • congestion: Weekends, public holidays, Golden Week, summer vacation, and autumn foliage season are extremely busy. Sightseeing boats can sell out early, so be sure to arrive early and secure your tickets during peak times.
  • Safety and Manners: When on the sightseeing boat, follow the instructions on board and do not enter any off-limits areas. The Uzumaki Path has a glass floor, so please keep an eye on small children. Always take your trash with you and enjoy the surrounding scenery quietly.
  • Ease of getting drunk:Sightseeing boats on the ocean will rock. If you are prone to motion sickness, take motion sickness medicine beforehand or sit near the center of the boat.
  • Clothes/preparation: The sea breeze can be strong and chilly. To stay comfortable, bring seasonal cold and windproof clothing, sunshades, and drinks.

Note: Before visiting, it's a good idea to check the official information on sightseeing boats, Naruto City tourist information, and the opening hours and closing days of Uzu-no-Michi. Please note that as it is a natural phenomenon, it is not guaranteed that you will be able to see the whirlpools.
