overview

One of Japan's largest sand dunes, it boasts a vast landscape facing the Sea of Japan. The scenery, interwoven with sandy slopes and grasslands, changes with the seasons and time of day, and you can also enjoy paragliding and seasonal experience events.

Highlights

  • A magnificent panorama from a high point called Umanose
  • A dramatic landscape created by the setting sun and sand ripples
  • Seasonal sand sculpture exhibits at the Sand Museum

access

It is about 20 minutes by bus from JR Tottori Station, or about 30 minutes by car from Tottori IC, and parking is available.

Estimated stay

It will take 1-2 hours to walk around and take photos, but if you include the activities, you should plan on spending about half a day.

Nearby spots

  • Sand Museum (Tottori City)
  • Shirato Shrine (Shirato, Tottori City)

Points to note

In the summer, the sand can get very hot, so be sure to take precautions against heatstroke and protect your feet. Be careful of blowing sand and poor visibility during strong winds.
