Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kochi Castle (Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture) is a valuable example of castle architecture remaining from the Edo period, and a historical relic counted as one of the twelve remaining castle towers. Developed as the headquarters of the Tosa clan, many buildings, including the castle tower, Honmaru Palace, and turrets, retain their Edo-period appearance. The castle is located on a hill above the city, and in addition to the majesty of the castle itself, visitors can get a real feel for the lifestyle and culture of the Tosa clan (feudal domain) era through exhibits of weapons, ancient documents, and other materials that remain within the castle. The castle's changing appearance with each season is also an attraction, with beautiful cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in autumn.
