Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Takata Matsubara is a pine forest along the coast in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, and was once a scenic spot with a beautiful landscape of tens of thousands of black pines stretching for about 2km. Even when viewed from afar, the line formed by the sea and the pines is impressive, and the area has long been popular with locals and travelers.

The entire area was almost completely destroyed by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, but the "Miracle Pine Tree (Restored Monument)" became widely known as a symbol of the disaster relics and reconstruction, and it was later developed into a reconstruction memorial park. Currently, it is being reborn as a spot where you can enjoy coastal scenery and strolls, as well as a place to convey the memory of the disaster.

Highlights

  • Miracle Pine Tree (Restored Monument):

The "Miracle Pine Tree," which gained attention as the only pine tree remaining underwater after the 2011 tsunami, has now been preserved and restored and is on display as a monument. It serves as a symbol of the memory of the disaster and the hope for recovery.

  • Takata Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park:

The park, which has been developed along the coast, has an observation deck, information panels, and walking paths, allowing you to view the sea while learning about what it was like at the time and the progress of its reconstruction.

  • Coastal scenery and morning and evening scenery:

The horizon formed by the pine forest and the sea, as well as the scenery of the sunrise and sunset, are captivating, and are enjoyable enough to enjoy just taking photos or taking a leisurely stroll.

  • Nature and bird watching:

Due to the coastal environment, migratory birds and sea creatures can be seen, making it an ideal place for seasonal nature observation.
