Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Takasakiyama Natural Zoo is a natural zoo located in Oita City, Oita Prefecture, and is known for its opportunity to observe wild Japanese macaques (Japanese macaques) up close. Locals have long known them as "Takasaki's monkeys," and the zoo has provided observation decks and walking paths to observe and protect the monkeys in a way that respects their behavior. A major attraction is the opportunity to observe the social behavior of the group (parent-child relationships, grooming, and fighting for rank within the group) in a natural environment, making it popular with a wide range of people, from families to animal lovers and photography enthusiasts.

Highlights

  • Observation deck: The observation deck is located in the direction of the feeding area where the group gathers, allowing you to observe the monkeys up close and in relative safety. It is also an easy location to take photos.
  • Feeding time: The staff sometimes feed the monkeys (for observation purposes), and this is a popular time as you can see the monkeys being very active (feeding times vary depending on the day, so it is recommended to check in advance).
  • Parent and child behavior: From spring to early summer, you can often see the cute behavior of baby monkeys, and you can enjoy the different expressions they show with each season.
  • Nature trail: You can observe wild monkeys and the natural environment while walking along the footpath from the base to the middle of the mountain (the path is well maintained, but there are some slopes).
  • Educational exhibits and visitor information: There are exhibits that teach about monkey ecology and conservation efforts, and there are also plenty of explanations for children.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest major station: JR Oita Station (Oita city center).
  • Bus: From Oita Station, take a local bus (such as Oita Bus) bound for Takasakiyama/Umitamago. The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes (depending on traffic conditions). The zoo is within walking distance from the bus stop.
  • By car: Accessible from Oita IC or Hayami IC on the Oita Expressway. Parking is available (please check with the facility for parking space and fees).
  • Walking: As it is far from the center of Oita city, we recommend visiting by public transportation or car.
  • Nearby Transportation: In the same area, there is Oita Marine Palace "Umitamago" and other attractions, and it is common to visit both places together as part of a sightseeing route.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short (viewing only): Approximately 30-60 minutes — enough time to watch the herd from the observation deck and take photos.
  • Standard (leisurely observation and viewing of exhibits): Approximately 1-2 hours — if you plan to time it around feeding times and take your time to look around the exhibits.
  • If you include nearby spots: 3-4 hours to a day - if you combine it with nearby attractions such as Umitamago.

Nearby spots

  • Oita Marine Palace "Umitamago": An aquarium located close to Takasakiyama, it is often visited together with the zoo.
  • Nature walks around Takasakiyama: You can stroll through the parks and promenades at the foot of the mountain.
  • Oita City Center (Funaimachi, Funai Castle Ruins Park, etc.): Enjoy historical facilities and shopping spots (travel by car or bus).
  • Beppu Onsen (about 20-30 minutes by car): A famous hot spring resort. If you have time, we recommend combining it with a tour of the hot spring town.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Please be aware that they are wild animals: The monkeys at Takasakiyama are a semi-wild population. Do not approach them carelessly or feed them by hand. There is a risk of being bitten or scratched.
  • No feeding and follow instructions: Please follow the rules of the facility and observe the instructions and posted notices of the staff. Feeding by visitors is often prohibited.
  • Car Management: Monkeys may be seen around the parking lot or on the road. Please keep your car doors and windows closed and do not leave luggage or food outside the car (they may damage your car).
  • Crowds: The park tends to be crowded on weekends, national holidays, consecutive holidays, spring break, and summer vacation. If you want to enjoy the park in peace and quiet, consider going on a weekday morning or just before closing time.
  • Seasonal notes: In spring, you can see baby monkeys, but there may be a lot of pollen and insects. In winter, the monkeys' fluffy fur is a sight to behold, but please take precautions against the cold.
  • Safety precautions: Keep a safe distance from the monkeys and avoid startling them with flash photography or loud noises. Be especially careful if you have small children with you.
  • Check the latest information: Opening hours, closing days, feeding times, admission fees, etc. may change, so we recommend checking the official website or facility before visiting.

*For the latest information on detailed access times, admission fees, feeding times, etc., please check the official Takasakiyama Natural Zoo website or Oita City tourist information.
