Located about 50 minutes by train from central Tokyo, this hiking spot is 599 meters above sea level. It is popular for its harmony of rich natural mountain ranges and ancient temples, its seasonal scenery, and its easy hiking trails. It is a tourist destination that can be enjoyed by beginners and families alike.

Highlights

  • Visiting Yakuo-in Temple and Historical Shrine and Temple Architecture

access

It's a short walk from Takaosanguchi Station on the Keio Line. It's about a 45-50 minute express train ride from Shinjuku. Public transportation is convenient, but special trains and local buses are expected to be crowded on weekends.

Estimated stay

A quick stroll using the cable car will take 2-3 hours, but if you include serious mountain climbing and worship, it will take about half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Takao-san Yakuo-in Temple (Hachioji City)
  • Tama Zoological Park (Hino City)

Points to note

The shrine is extremely crowded during the autumn foliage season and on weekends. The mountain paths can become slippery when it rains, so please wear waterproof and warm footwear and clothing. Please take your trash with you and observe proper etiquette for protecting nature and worshipping.
