overview

Takachiho Gorge is a scenic valley with a deep V-shaped valley, cliffs with columnar joints, and clear streams, and is symbolized by the 17m Manai Falls. Legends related to the myth of "Amanoiwato" from the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki remain, and the beauty of the valley in the daytime and Kagura performances in the evenings attract visitors.

Highlights

  • A close-up look at the cliffs and Manai Falls from a rowboat
  • A bird's-eye view from the promenade along the valley and a great photo spot
  • Experience the world of mythology at Takachiho Kagura, a nighttime performance

access

It takes about two hours by car from the center of Miyazaki City, and by public transport, you can take a local bus from JR Nobeoka Station or Miyazaki Airport to Takachiho. The gorge is within walking distance from the center of town, but bus services are limited.

Estimated stay

Walking through the valley and boat ride takes 2-4 hours. If you want to see the night kagura performance, it takes half a day to 1 hour.
