Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Takabocchi Plateau is a highland area in Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture, known as an observation spot where you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. From the high ground, you can see the Northern Alps, Central Alps, and Southern Alps, and on clear days, you can even see Mount Fuji and Matsumoto Plain in the distance. Near the summit, there is the Takabocchi Mountain Observation Deck and radio tower, and it is popular with photography enthusiasts, couples, and drivers, especially for its beautiful sunrises, sunsets, night views, and seas of clouds. The area is also characterized by its changing appearance with the seasons, from cool grassland scenery in summer, to silver grass and seas of clouds in autumn, and snowy landscapes in winter.
Highlights
- 360-degree panoramic view: Views of the Northern and Southern Alps, Matsumoto Plain, and Mount Fuji (if conditions are good).
– Sunrise and morning glow: During the season when the sea of clouds appears, you can see a fantastic morning view (especially in the early mornings from autumn to winter).
- Sunset and night view spots: The changing colors from dusk to night and the contrast with the starry sky and city lights on a clear day are beautiful.
- Japanese pampas grass field (Autumn): The scenery of the Japanese pampas grass that spreads across the plateau swaying in the wind is a popular photo spot.
– Wild birds and highland plants: You can enjoy observing seasonal wildflowers and wild birds.
- Best places to take photos: Observation decks and nearby open lookout points are popular. If you want to take landscape photos, we recommend bringing a wide-angle lens and a tripod.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest public transportation: JR Shiojiri Station and Matsumoto Station are the main entrances, but there are few direct regular buses to the plateau, so access by public transportation is inconvenient. Special buses may operate during the tourist season, so we recommend checking in advance.
- Car: This is the most convenient way to get there. Access is via roads (forest roads, prefectural roads, etc.) from the center of Shiojiri City to the plateau. The mountain roads are narrow and have many curves, so driving caution is required. There are several parking lots near the peak, but they may be full during busy times.
- Taxi: If public transportation is unavailable or inconvenient, you can take a taxi from Shiojiri Station or Matsumoto Station (fares vary depending on distance and time of day).
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
– Daytime scenic walk: 1-2 hours (enjoying the view and taking photos).
- Sunrise/sunset photography: 2-3 hours (including travel and photography time). If you plan to photograph a sea of clouds or the starry sky, plan on spending more time.
- For picnics and relaxing: about half a day.
The time required will vary depending on the season and purpose (photography/walking).

Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)
– Winter and early morning road conditions: Due to the altitude, there is a high possibility of snow accumulation and ice in winter, so chains or studless tires may be necessary. Please check road closure information in advance.
- Caution when driving on mountain roads: There are many narrow roads and curves with poor visibility, so please be careful of oncoming vehicles and pedestrians.
- Parking/Crowding: Parking lots tend to be crowded at sunrise, in the evening, and on holidays, and may fill up. Please leave early and allow plenty of time.
- Toilets and food facilities: There are limited facilities around the summit, so it is a good idea to prepare water and food in advance.
- Manners: To protect the natural environment, please be sure to take your trash with you, and smoking and fire are strictly prohibited except in designated areas. Please do not trample on grasslands or vegetation.
- Photography/Drones: Flying drones may affect nearby regulations and radio towers, so please check the rules and obtain permission if necessary.
- Sudden changes in weather: The weather on the plateau is prone to change. Be sure to bring warm clothing and rain gear, and avoid strenuous activities.
Supplementary Information (Planning Tips)
– The best time to see the sunrise, sea of clouds, and Japanese pampas grass depends on the season and weather. If you are aiming to see them, checking the weather forecast and sea of cloud information (whether the conditions are favorable for radiation cooling) in advance will increase your chances of success.
– If you are using public transportation, check the timetable and special bus information in advance to ensure you have transportation to get home (public transportation is often unavailable at night).
If necessary, we can provide more detailed information on seasonal attractions, specific parking information, and recommendations for nearby restaurants and accommodations. Please let us know which season you plan to visit.
