Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Umagase is a scenic cliff-like spot on the coast of Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture. The cliffs have been carved away by years of marine erosion (erosion by waves) and weathering, and the sheer cliffs jutting out into the sea and the expansive panorama of the Pacific Ocean are a highlight. The name is said to come from the part of the rock that looks like a horse's back, and the contrast with the rough seas creates a dynamic landscape.
Geologically, the area is home to coastal landforms such as sea cliffs, sea caves, and rock pillars, making it popular with tourists and photography enthusiasts as a place where you can experience the dynamism of nature up close. There are observation points and promenades, and on clear days you can enjoy a nearly 360-degree view of the horizon and distant coastline.
Highlights
