Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Yoro Tenmei Hantenchi is a unique outdoor art space located in Yoro Town, Gifu Prefecture. Produced in the 1990s by architects and artists Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins, it is known as an experiential landscape art that aims to "shake up physical sensations and reverse everyday perceptions." With slanted floors, distorted walkways, and optically tricky structures, the architecture itself is a work of art, and visitors are invited to walk, feel, and experience the work with their bodies. Its photogenic visuals and the ability to actually move and enjoy it are major attractions.

Highlights

  • Sloped floors and diagonal walkways: Walking along these walkways tests your sense of balance and allows you to experience physical sensations that are different from your everyday life.
  • A space that utilizes optical illusions: There are many effects that make you feel "upside down" or "distorted" using the colors and shapes of the walls and floors.
  • Maze-like structure: Your sense of place changes as you wander around, creating the joy of discovery.
  • Photo Spot: The bold shapes and colors make for a great photogenic subject.
  • Experience art with your body: not only can you look at it, but you can also touch and walk through it to complete the artwork.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest train station: Yoro Station on the Yoro Railway (Yoro Line), about a 10-20 minute walk (some slopes and hills).
  • Public transportation: It is convenient to transfer to the Yoro Railway from Ogaki Station or from the Gifu area. Special buses may run during events and holidays.
  • By car: Approximately 10-20 minutes (depending on traffic conditions) from the Yoro IC on the Meishin Expressway via national and prefectural roads. Parking is available (please check official information as the number of spaces and fees may vary depending on the season).
  • Location: They are often located adjacent to the Yoro Park area, with tourist attractions nearby (such as Yoro Falls).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Typical tour: 1-2 hours (to cover the main areas).
  • If you want to take your time and experience the experience and take photos: About 2-3 hours. Since you will be moving your body a lot, you may get tired easily, so we recommend taking breaks in between.

Nearby spots

  • Yoro Falls (inside Yoro Park): A famous spot with beautiful scenery throughout the seasons. You can also take a stroll around the site of Reversible Destiny.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Safety: There are many slopes and steps, so there is a risk of falling. Please wear comfortable shoes (sneakers, etc.).
  • Barrier-free access: There are many areas where it is difficult to move around with a wheelchair or stroller. If you have a physical disability, please consult and check in advance.
  • Small children: Please keep an eye on them as they will move around playfully.
  • Rainy weather: It can be slippery and dangerous. In the event of rain or bad weather, please do not push yourself and consider canceling or rescheduling.
  • Crowds: It gets crowded on weekends, holidays, and during peak tourist season. If you want to enjoy it quietly, we recommend going on weekday mornings.
  • Photography and etiquette: Generally, photography is permitted, but please be considerate to avoid disturbing other visitors. Do not enter exhibition areas or restricted areas without permission.
  • Admission Fees and Opening Hours: This is a paid facility, and fees, opening hours, and closing days may vary. Please check the official website or on-site information for the latest information.
