Hida Great Limestone Cave is a large, naturally formed limestone cave in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, which has been developed for tourism. Its attractions include the colorful stalactites formed by the erosion of limestone over many years, as well as the quietness and cool air inside the cave. You can enjoy the mysterious scenery unique to caves up close, and it's a popular summer tourist destination as well, offering a place to cool off in any season. Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Takayama Station is the nearest major station (most commonly accessed from Takayama city center).
  • Bus: Depending on the season and itinerary, it is possible to access the area by local bus or tourist bus from Takayama Station or Takayama City. Timetables and operation may change depending on the season, so we recommend checking in advance.
  • By car: Accessing the area from the Takayama area is convenient. Parking is often available on-site, which is convenient for families or those with lots of luggage (please check the official website for parking availability and fees).
  • Note: Public transportation may be limited, so be careful when traveling early in the morning or in the evening. It is best to refer to your car navigation system or official website for directions.

  • Clothing: The cave is cool throughout the year (approximately 10°C). Even in summer, it's comfortable to bring a jacket. Non-slip shoes are recommended.
  • Accessibility: Due to stairs, steps and narrow passageways, it may be difficult to navigate with a wheelchair or stroller. Please plan accordingly, taking into account your physical strength and mobility.
  • Crowds: It tends to get crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, the New Year holidays, and weekends. If you want to avoid the crowds, it's best to visit on a weekday or right after opening.
  • Photography: Photography is permitted in many areas, but please follow posted signs as flash photography can be disruptive to equipment and other visitors.
  • Manners: The cave is a natural heritage site, so please observe basic manners such as not touching or writing graffiti, and taking your trash with you.
